Stick and Balloon presents to you a little tale.
A shy fiddler named Niki meets a lovely moon-spirit and her strange musical band. Amazed and attracted, he sums up the courage and attempts to impress her. But lo’ the nervousness, a note shrieks into the air and pierces the night. Niki despairs as the moon-spirit leaves, disappointed. But as she walks away, a violin hum pulls at her heart and she decides to take a hopeful chance.
An age-old story of music, romance and epic transformation, Stick and Balloon presents a new twist with the marriage of stop-motion and traditional paper animation techniques.
The film is directed, animated and designed by Sara Chong and Chen Yanyun, a pair as complementary as a little red balloon and a long hardy stick.
With the help of "Mary & Max" VFX Supervisor Michael Allen, fiddler Marjolaine Parot, composer Jachin Pousson and the beautiful tunes of klezmer and fiddle music by Alicia Svigal, Trad'ouir, Danilo and Svetozar Milosavljevic, MoonChild weaves together a spirit of sound, sights and heart, which we hope you’ll enjoy.
Two and a half years have passed since the start of this journey, and we are finally at the end of our road. Our experiment with combining stop-motion and traditional animation techniques began two years ago as a huge challenge, as we discovered there were few animations carrying that combination of styles. With no references or established pipelines to research, we had to create our own way of doing things. We worked hard, tried and failed many times, and had to plough through challenges such as finance, art, machines, lack of experience and more. We are proud of the look we have designed and the story we have written - a story about love, confidence, growing and blooming.
We would like to appeal to everyone to give us a hand, and walk with us in the final lap of our adventure as we work on the music and post-production to make the film as best we can.
We are currently in need of money to cover the basic cost of music and post-production, and will be very very grateful for all your contributions, big or small. The truth is, we need quite a bit more than our Kickstarter goal, so all additional funds will be welcomed with great loving arms and sent towards polishing the film and making it the shiniest it could ever be!
As a thank you gesture, we have come up with a bunch of fantastic rewards such as postcards, posters, and handmade puppets available only at kickstarters, so please support us!
Stick and Balloon currently resides in Singapore, and it would be much appreciated if you would add in the cost of postage for the goodies.
And of course, to end it all off, we will share our poprocks and mini-fire crackers, horns of beer and well-deserved puffs from our shisha bottle with all of you...
