I am attempting to aquire funding for my first solo album to be titled, "Waking Up the Echoes". This is for anyone holding onto a dream
I've been "planning" on making this album for a while, since my former band's only album released in 2000. But that album was never really what I had hoped it would be, and it left me a little unresolved. Since then, I've been dying to release not only an album that I feel is finished, but a solo project. I've always said that I don't think I'll ever feel fullfilled as an artist or musician until I can say I've release at least one album I can be proud of.
I've tried funding this personally, which never really worked because I was paying for studio time as I went, and never really had a good solid block of time to get any real work done... it was always in bits and pieces. My other option was to get to the south Jersey/Philly area to record with a friend, which I tried for a while, but the commute from Vermont wasn't ideal for someone who has a day job and a family. I always felt rushed and the recordings showed it.
After asking around, people have recommended Kickstarter to me and I've always been a little skeptical. But I like that if I don't hit my goal, the people who donated get their money back - no harm no foul. So many people have donated already at live shows, but like I said, that money went to travel expenses to record for free or studio time that I could only afford in bits and pieces. With an actual budget that I can bring to a studio allows me the freedom to book time in a manner that works for everyone - me, the studio, the session musicians, etc, as opposed to booking time in blocks that I can afford at the time; allowing me to keep going if the flow is going well or walking away for a moment to regain perspective without worrying about how much time I'm wasting or how much those 10 minutes just cost me.
I want this album to be a refection of the places I've been, the people I've come to know and love, and the road ahead. Now that I'm a new dad, I'd love to be able to give my son this gift... not the album, but what I hope it will represent to him: the promise that if you push hard and persevere, beautiful things can happen. To dare to move the world if even it's one room at a time.
