She's calls herself a "Modern day, sword-swallowing, painted lady," and now we will go inside her world to try and "get" what makes her tick.
For many years now, "Lucky Hell" has been building a reputation around the world as a premier performer of seemingly dangerous acts that arouse emotions and titillate the senses. Fire-eating, sword-swallowing and body-suspension are but a few tricks she has up her (painted) sleeves.
It is estimated that there are less than 100 practicing sword-swallowers on the planet today. What makes someone want to perform such a dangerous act? Or suspending from the height of a 10-story building with nothing but metal hooks through the flesh on her back to hold her in place. These are the kinds of "acts" that Lucky Hell has performed already, and what could be next.
A couple of years ago I traveled to Helsinki, Finland to shoot a music video called "White Trash Blues." We cast several local models for the video, one of whom was "Lucky Hell." Below is a production still from the shoot where she played one of our "white trash girls," drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and roasting hot dogs.
During our brief time together on the production of WTB I began to realize that Lucky is a creative force. Since that time I have continued to follow her career and am continually amazed by the way she constantly raises her performance levels.
As a documentary filmmaker and artist myself I am intrigued by Lucky Hell. Admittedly, I don't quite understand what would compel someone to do many of the things she does. It is this combination that has inspired the idea for "Getting Lucky," my own personal quest to "get" what drives her and perhaps others in the small, yet faithful scenes in which she performs around the world.
This project will consist of a documentary film utilizing archived footage and photos from Luckys' colorful career, as well as new interviews with her and the people around her, and a new series of still and video imagery to tie the whole thing together.
The final product will have many working parts that combined serve as a full installation featuring the film, art exhibit and coffee table book, or alone will each stand on their own.
I have recently been experimenting with various 3D film techniques in my still and motion pictures. Some of these will be uniquely brought into this series and available as part of the final products.
We are setting out to entertain and enlighten with this series. The funds raised from this Kickstarter campaign will go towards:
1. Travel, food and lodging to Helsinki, Finland.
2. Additional gear and equipment for the production.
3. Post production editing of film and creating photograph and book.
Creating a project of this magnitude isn't cheap. The funding goal for this campaign has been identified as a "minimum" amount to get it done. Additional money raised over and above the goal will allow us to keep the "Getting Lucky" project going through completion.
If you're still not convinced have a look at the photos below and you can to imagine the "wow" factor a project like this will bring to the art community around the world.
