MAY 1977 is a Project I have been contemplating now for several years. In the format of a Fiction Novel, I intend to capture the 1977 STAR WARS phenomenon in the same manner George Lucas captured the 1950's in his film AMERICAN GRAFFITI.
The Money I hope to raise will go towards paying for Editorial Services for my manuscript as well as printing a first "short run" of books. An E-Book will also be made available.
The story takes place in the fictional East Coast town of SHARON AMITY in the year of 1977.
Ziggy Yarlan: Ziggy is the main character. He is a 13 year old boy, recently orphaned. He finds himself on an adventure of self discovery. His story is about coming of age.
Major Tom: Major Tom is a family friend who steps in to help Ziggy deal with the recent death of his Mother, that left him an orphan. Tom is a very talented Guitar and Banjo player. Major Tom also suffers from Bi-Polar Disorder. Tom is persecuted by Ziggy's evil Aunt and Uncle, who have been assigned as Ziggy's legal guardians.
Marey Dubose: Marey is Major Tom's good friend. They both met in the Psyche Ward of Sharon Amity Hospital. Marey, who fancies himself as a swashbuckling, intergalactic blockade runner, is also a cartoonist and Banjo player. He drives a 1976 Chevy van airbrushed with STAR WARS murals and named "The MILLENNIUM FALCON". Marey also has a large Berger Picard dog he calls "Chewy".
"MAY 1977" Is a story of hope and coming of age. It follows a "Rag-Tag" group of original STAR WARS costumers as the venture out into the new and uncharted frontier of STAR WARS Fandom.
I had just turned 14 years old when Star Wars opened in MAY 1977. Before I was able to see the movie, my Mother (RIP) died in a plane crash along with her fiancee (The Pilot). Perviously in 1969 my Father died in a boating accident on the Delaware Canal. I was 6 years old and on the boat when it happened. As you can imagine, being orphaned in such a way at 14 years old had me pretty depressed. That's when my Mother's young friend and co-worker came into my life at Hyperdrive Speeds.
He took me to see STAR WARS for the first time 2 weeks after my Mother's funeral. This was in late August 1977 and there were still lines to get in!
Watching that movie brought tears to my eyes. It gave me hope that the world had not ended. I know it probably sounds silly, but that's the way it was.
It didn't end at just going to see the movie. My Mother's friend introduced me to something really cool. It was called Paper Mache. We made costumes and basically went on tour! We went to the theaters, malls, and even the children's ward at the hospital. It was amazing!
So this is my story I am adapting into a Fiction Novel.
I have posted my 1st Chapter online!
I was also VERY excited to receive a permission letter from Lucasfilm Ltd. to make references to Star Wars and it's characters in my Novel.
