What is A TINY PORTAL about?
A Tiny Portal is the story of Fern, a young woman with great potential who struggles to connect with people. When her elderly neighbors reach out to her and give her a special gift, she discovers how to travel through secret portals.
Is it going to be any good?
We completely believe in this project. During the development of the script, we worked hard to make it good. We studied the short story greats like Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. We read their essays on what makes a short story successful and how it differs from a novel - we then applied their insights to writing a short film.
After writing the first draft of the script, we enlisted the help of an amazing script consultant, Beverly Neufield, from the Slamdance Film Festival, as well as the former head of a bunch of major movie studios, Ken Rotcop, to help us do some polishing. Their help really took the script to the next level.
We have amazing actors. The part of Belinda Turner is played by Ann Benson who currently stars on NBC's hit show Betty White's Off Their Rockers. The part of John Turner is played by Richard Riehle who has been featured in over 200 big films including The Fugitive, Bridesmaids, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and one of our favorites, Office Space where he played the memorable Tom Smykowski the character who invents the "Jump to Conclusions" mat.
The score is going to be composed and performed by an amazing musician named Perrin Cloutier of the band Beirut. His musical style and creativity is going to bring a completely unique sound to this film.
We shot the film on a RED digital cinema camera. This is the same type of camera that many of today's Hollywood films are shot on. This is going to help give the film a big budget look.
All of the special effects in the film are done for real - no CGI or greenscreen. We feel like this adds so much realism to the film. Some big directors who inspired us by doing their special effects this way are Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Fountain), Christoper Nolan (Memento, Dark Knight Trilogy), and Terry Gilliam (12 Monkeys, Brazil).
Who are we?

How can I help the film?
- The goal of this campaign is to raise $12,500. It's not going to us, it's all going to the production of the film.
- The campaign has a hard deadline of 11:59pm on September 14th, but don't hesitate to become a backer before the deadline.
- If you decide to help, you pledge whatever you want in exchange for cool rewards (for example, a DVD of the film when it's done, a download, your name in the credits, an invitation the premiere, etc...)
- The more you pledge, the better the rewards! Take a look at the column on the right to see what's available.
- If we make the goal by the deadline, your credit card is charged what you pledged (but not until then). We'll get to finish the film and submit it to film festivals, and you'll get to be an integral part of the project.
- If we don't make the goal by the deadline (falling even a penny short), your credit card is not charged, we get nothing and you don't get any of the rewards.
Where will the money go?
Up until this point, the entire production of A TINY PORTAL has been completely self-financed. To keep production costs down, we called in as many favors as we could, enlisted friends and family to donate their time, and the majority of us, including the writer/director, director of photography, assistant camera, assistant director, and casting director worked for free.
We ended up spending about $20,000 during the production of the film to pay for equipment rentals, insurance, actor's salary, payroll, SAG fees, food for cast and crew, wardrobe, set-building materials.
The money that we raise through Kickstarter will help us in post-production. The film still needs editing, sound design, foley, a score, and color-correction.
We're getting great deals on all these things and everyone is working for free or almost free, but there are some unavoidable hard costs involved. We're going to need to pay for airfare to NYC to meet with our musicians, rental fees for rehearsal / recording space, food for our musicians and foley artists, submission fees to film festivals, legal fees, and kickstarter fees.
Our goals with the film
Our goal with A TINY PORTAL is to earn opportunity to screen it at some of the major festivals around the world. These include Sundance, Tribeca, Slamdance, Toronto, and Cannes. It is a great honor and huge challenge to be selected for any of these film festivals, but we feel that this film has what it takes to be selected.

Help spread the word about A TINY PORTAL
Another way you can participate (other than backing the project) is to help spread the word about the project! If you know anyone who might be interested in helping through Kickstarter, or simply might want to watch the film when it's completed, you can be a huge help to the film by spreading the word. You could email a friend, share it on facebook, post it to an online forum, anything you can think of to help us build an audience.
Feel free to ask us any questions you have by using the "send message" link at the top of this page.
