Stretch Goals and Some Other Kickstarters
Our Kickstarter campaign is going amazingly well and we cannot thank you all enough for your support. There's a surreal quality about the whole thing, even more so than the first time we did this. We have been getting questions about stretch goals - what would we do if we go significantly over our goal?
Well, we have a couple thoughts:
$105,000 - LOCALIZATION
Bringing the game to German, Spanish, Japanese and French audiences.
$115,000 - NEW BACKGROUND ARTIST
We would like to bring on a third contractor to make some background art for the game, making some nebulas, planets and space goodness. Clearly this is going to be in the game as-is, but we would really like to find someone who does this kind of work with more skill than we possess.
$125,000 - MOD SUPPORT FOR PC
This is the big one. Basically this would be built for Steam Workshop, giving our users the ability to make their own uniforms, weapons, tilesets, alien speices and missions. Will this happen if we don't get there? We want it to, but that extra money buys us a lot of time to get the tools right and make sure that our community can tie into steam and share their own creations. We even attached a screen shot of what it might look like.
So thats what we would do. We budgeted well for the conversion and the rest of our team, so these aren't critical paths. But as you can imagine, money makes these things easier and faster.
On a separate note we wanted to call out a couple kickstarters we feel like our community might be interested in. Both are close to their goals and perhaps our community can help these devs out.
CREA
Great pixel art and a fun concept. They are currently at $12,124 of $15,000 asked.

MOON INTERN
Some more fun pixel art and a fun sci-fi theme to boot. Currently at $27,827 of $30,000 asked.

I'm willing to do the French localization for free if you need help.
Creator Jim Burzelic on August 1, 2012
I had already supported both of those other projects, but I wanted to say that I think that is a really cool thing to do. I haven't seen anyone else point to other kickstarters. Good on you guys!
Creator Christian Auby on August 1, 2012
I'd prioritize mod support before translations, but I realize that might be a business decision. English is not my primary language, but even if my language was available I'd still play in English. It would be interesting to see if this is the case for other non-English gamers as well.
Creator EOPE42 on August 1, 2012
If we reach these stretch goals, will this also help with adding more content: "More rooms, more aliens, more ship layouts, more crew haircuts, more skills, more dog poop"?
Creator Star Command on August 1, 2012
Basically we have a copy deck and we will make sure each language comes in at $1000 or so for the translation - then we can copy and paste - and then sit back and watch as "starship' is replaced with "dick and balls" without our knowing it.
Creator Paul O'Sullivan on August 1, 2012
I concur with what most folks are saying about localization. Modding to me is much higher on the list of priorities. Although.. Localization will increase the amount of copies sold worldwide which in turn will hlep you guys improve game functions.. My only question is $5,000 a realistic budget to hire a translator? : )
Creator irangan on August 1, 2012
Pledged! Hope that you guys can achieve 125k!
Creator Star Command on August 1, 2012
yeah itll be text -there no audio in english - and the music/sfx are gonna be badass - so no worries about changing those.
Creator ThomasN on August 1, 2012
Localized audio is BAD BAD BAD.
Localized text/subtitles are GOOD GOOD GOOD.
Creator Eric Ponvelle on August 1, 2012
I agree with the previous poster. Mod support would generate a lot of interest in this game long-term while localization may. Putting it in the Steam Workshop would also give it some advertising dollars. Not saying the $125k is unattainable, but I think it should be a higher priority.
Creator Andrey Ivanov on August 1, 2012
Mod support would be great while localization is a huge money/efforts sink. And Japanese? Really?
Creator Pedasn - "Asylum" Backer on August 1, 2012
+1 for loacalization, no matter what other people say.
Creator Clifton Gordon on August 1, 2012
If i go with the 40 dollar pledge do i get stuff as it comes out or do i have to wait for it all in OCT?
Creator Evgeniy Vigovskiy on August 1, 2012
Just leave the mod support on the list and I'm happy. Just look at Cortex Command and it's mods, it's in alpha for ages, but still alive mostly thanks to mods.
Creator Kris on August 1, 2012
yeah that is true we pay a lot of money for english / german translation .... plz don't do that.
Creator Olivier Morel on August 1, 2012
Yeah... as a swiss (we've 3 main national languages here) I can tell you, it's more than just 5% of your budget and even more if you want a decent translation (with jokes and so on)
Creator Shane Zehnder on July 31, 2012
STOP with this localization BS! SOOOOO many gaming companies have said it's a money pit that leads to NOWHERE! Please take that off the list.
Creator Daniel on July 31, 2012
I'm wary of localization. It's a alot more costly than it looks like initially. Not only do you have to do it for practically everything in the game and devote time to finding odd wordings, you also have to take into account that it will impact costs of any future patches/bugfixes as well.
Creator Zaos on July 31, 2012
Both Crea and Moon Intern have gained an additional backer in me :)
Nice stretch goals guys. I really look forward to seeing how far the project goes in terms of backing. Mod support would be awesome!
Creator Hampus Josserand on July 31, 2012
Localization is BS, we(I) don't want you to waste your time/money on that at all. Mod support sounds awesome tho, try to reach that by all means necessary.
Creator Matt. F on July 31, 2012
Mod support would be a great addition!
@Kimberly @ThomasN
As far as I know when you uninstall steam you are also uninstalling all the games you have through steam on that system at the same time. You can however just install steam and the game then just run the game in offline mode so steam doesn't run when you are playing.
Creator ThomasN on July 31, 2012
Kimberly: Excellent, I've seen you don't even have to install anything as you can download Desura games directly from their Website. As long as only the mod-distribution is going on around Steam, I'm a happy camper.
Creator Kimberly on July 31, 2012
@ThomasN
The game is being distributed through Steam and Desura, but you don't need to keep either running when playing or anything like that; feel free to uninstall them afterwards.
Creator Thilo Bayer on July 31, 2012
German localization would be awesome :-)
Creator EOPE42 on July 31, 2012
@ThomasN: The devs are big fans of steam (TF2 eg); it's also a large delivery system to be a part of with a good modding scene. So that's there target, although other options would include Desura. But you can question to the devs if they will also sell a DRM-free version from their own website also as an alternative option or at least as an option only available to Kickstarter backers? :)
Creator ThomasN on July 31, 2012
Steam? Wait! Does this game require DRM (steam) ?
Creator Gaston Ragnar Rippinger on July 31, 2012
I might be leaning out of the window a little FAR with this (cuz I have no idea how much work it might end up being), but I am willing to help with localization to German. I am serious about it :)
Native speaker of both English and German.
Creator Jasson McMorris on July 31, 2012
Mod support all of the way! Thanks for the shoutout for Crea. You guys rock! :D
Creator EOPE42 on July 31, 2012
Mod Support sounds amazingly full of potential. Something Steam community should know about?
