It looks like the gay silencer didn't work to well...
Anyway, has anyone else noticed that Stainless hasn't said anything about the release for consoles yet? I'm excited about the news, but it's been three months and they haven't officially said anything here.
Creator Charles David Gibson 4 days ago
I'd like to say this; It's super GAY that Carmageddon: Reincarnation isn't out! Keep my money. I want this.
:D
Creator Veav 5 days ago
I've asked for and received a refund in the amount of my pledge, so my stake in this is done. Congratulations; you've flipped a supporter into a detractor.
I hope the game succeeds. I also hope that the silence is because the developers realize they're drinking the kool-aid, but don't want to ruin their "stick it to the man, anti-PC brigade" facade. This would be a mark of cowardice but is still better than the absolute assholeness of "yes, we honestly believe gay-shaming is the ethically and morally appropriate thing to do".
Finally, I hope this shit doesn't cross over into the game. Leave a legacy you can be proud of, huh?
Creator schnide 6 days ago
Fellow Kickstarters - please be aware that, at the time of writing, Stainless Games supports the use of anti-gay language. See update #40 if you're interested in the debate, although Neil 'Nobby' Barnden is standing by Stainless Games' support for homophobia at the time of writing and is refusing to discuss it.
Creator Kevin S - Heroes in a Half Dome on June 10
Well, the specifics of that particular rant are actually quite enlightening. I'm not completely convinced, but you've at least caught me being a giant hypocrite. Sorry for being such an insufferable negative sounding noun which can't be construed as offensive to anyone.
Creator Veav on June 9
Fact is I've been in gay relationships before and am open to doing so again, but that's not actually relevant to this discourse. My tags - whether I'm gay or straight, black or white, urban or rural, steam or open-source - none of that is a barrier to basic human empathy.
You personally aren't offended, I get that, it's what you got out of your life experiences I guess. But neither you or Batwick get to decide if *I* am. That one's up to me. They posted something I found offensive; as such, I am offended. I AM sick of this shit, it's the death of a thousand cuts for the brotherhood of humanity. And you can keep your high five.
Creator Kevin S - Heroes in a Half Dome on June 9
I'm sorry, I don't think people need to have a fit about someone using a word that gets their point across perfectly clearly just in case it offends someone. If an actual gay person wants to post here, and say "look, I'm just sick of this" I'd give that person a high five for saying so, but this PC garbage with going around being a priori offended on behalf of some person who could be justifiably offended but may or may not actually exist is just ridiculous.
Creator Veav on June 9
It ain't about me either, mon. My perfect world isn't one where everyone is offended by something Stainless posted; it's one where Stainless doesn't post (and proceed to defend) offensive things. Stop ad hominem...ing.
I sure wasn't looking for reasons to be pissed off at them! Carmageddon is a warm and fuzzy childhood memory and I was looking forward to welcoming it to the modern age. It's a sad fact that the devs themselves haven't got there yet, and I have to respond to that or my convictions aren't worth shit.
Creator schnide on June 9
I'm afraid you've failed to understand the argument there Kevin. That's just what I didn't say in the post below you, given exactly that I argued everyone is different and there's a level of consideration and understanding that comes along with that in a modern, tolerant society.
You can find it amongst all the other questions I asked you which I'm daring you to ask yourself and challenge the idea that you might not have seen the full picture up till now - precisely because you're saying that because you're not offended by it, no-one else should be offended by it. Or projecting, as you might call it.
Creator Kevin S - Heroes in a Half Dome on June 9
Actually you're both saying everyone should be offended by this thing. Stop projecting.
Creator schnide on June 9
"I'm not explaining how people should feel about things."
Except Kevin, that is literally what you ARE doing in exactly the same post:
"*normal* people don't let that one fairly inconsequential thing about themselves define them."
And while we're here, we should look at your 'normal' phrase too. What's the definition of 'normal' for you? Is it people like you, by any chance? It certainly seems a lot like the argument that because it doesn't affect *you* it shouldn't affect anyone else either. Do you accept that just because you don't understand what the problem is, that doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't a problem? I said this in the update comments and I'm keen to see what Stainless have to say, but please feel to address it yourself - do you use the N word much? Do you want to use the N word, but feel repressed because the PC crowd won't let you?
Or do you accept that language can sometimes be loaded with meaning, intent, historical implications or hatred? You, presumably not being black, are able to understand that using certain words helps to reinforce what people perceive as common attitudes in society, and also suggests that people should view you in certain ways for the words you use too. If you were to throw the N word around, I would automatically assume you are either ignorant or racist, and most likely both. If you use the word 'gay' in a derogatory sense, I would automatically assume you are either ignorant or homophobic, or quite possibly both. Whether that's right or wrong, who knows? But your inability to combat that is exactly the same force that helps perpetuate homophobia wherever the word 'gay' is a synonym for stupid, bad etc. Every single time you use that word in the negative sense, it further muddies the water about what it means to anyone who hears you about what it means in the other sense.
You know full well that if you trivialise the argument, "one random bloke saying a word on the internet, etc." it has less power. But you should also know right now that there are LEGIONS of people using the word in the same way and when you're growing up life can be awful confusing. If you're trying to figure out who you are, whether that's your sexuality or otherwise, then seeing any reference to a key part of you repeatedly in a negative sense is going to make you think differently about yourself. In some people, that doesn't do so much. In others, on the far end of the other scale, it can and does lead them to taking their own lives. Point being there is no such thing as normal, and you are seeing life through the very limited lens of your own experience. Given the wide range of human experiences that are actually out there, are you really qualified to be telling those owning one you'll never have to just simply get over it?
Creator Veav on June 9
"I'm not explaining how people should feel things. I'm explaining that contrary to how these people feel, *normal* people don't feel this way about things." gjb. If you honestly believe that there was 100% nothing wrong with the post - and that "sticks and stones" is anything but a trite and hollow phrase - then you're part of the problem.
But this ain't about you; this is about Stainless Games, Update #40, and the institutionalized homophobia they're aiding and abetting. It's NOT all right. "Sticks and stones" is not an acceptable defense, "boys will be boys" is not an acceptable defense, "lighten up and take a joke" is not an acceptable defense. Radio silence sure the fuck isn't an acceptable defense. I expect them to man up, behave like adults, and behave like it's 2013.
Creator Kevin S - Heroes in a Half Dome on June 9
I'm not explaining how people should feel about things. I'm explaining that contrary to the PC crowd and some activists beliefs, *normal* people don't let that one fairly inconsequential thing about themselves define them.
Creator Veav on June 8
It's good that they've got you around to explain how they should feel about things, then. You are truly a credit to team.
The ultimate takeaway of all this is it's demonstrably a hot-button issue and, for instance, not something I expected Stainless to drop in my inbox. I don't know if Batwick was playing the heel, trying to present as one of the boys or simply IS that guy, but the moment Nobby failed to address it and Batwick blew it off as a harmless joke, they made it clear they were owning it.
Not on my bloody dime.
Creator Kevin S - Heroes in a Half Dome on June 8
I was relentlessly mocked for my own effeminacy and the company I kept growing up. (One of my best friends actually did turn out to be gay.) I'm fairly certain that acceptance AT HOME is the bulk of the problem, and not actually some random bloke on the internet complaining that his braking is gay. I may not be homosexual myself but 95% of the now indignantly self-righteous people out there have no f-ing business lecturing me on acceptance.
Creator Veav on June 8
Not everything we were told as a kid was true. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_among_LGBT_youth
Creator Kevin S - Heroes in a Half Dome on June 8
When I was a kid we had an expression which started "Sticks and stones..." Today we have crusaders concerned some actual gay person might kill themselves because they read someone calling themselves gay on the internet. Pathetic.
Creator Andrew Funk on June 8
+1 for Schnide's comment. Does Stainless have plans of addressing this in any type of forward thinking manner or should I look into ways to try and get a refund as well?
Creator schnide on June 8
"It's a shame that some Backers were disappointed that this update wasn't news on game progress"
No, Nobby. It's a shame that your writer chose to use homophobic language but worse yet that you publicly supported it afterwards. Here's my take on what's interesting/fun.
Everyone finds news on Carmageddon development interesting/fun as it's the project we backed.
Some people will find news on the Radical track day interesting/fun.
But what no-one finds interesting/fun is the use of language which contributes, albeit in a smaller way than some other actions, to the suffering, depression, self-harm and suicides that occurs due to homophobic discrimination and bullying. You may not realise it, but you are part of it. There is absolutely no excuse in today's world, given that the UK very recently became a leader in equal rights by giving marriage rights to gay couples, for saying that using gay as a synonym for stupid, bad or substandard is 'just humour'. It's just humour to you, because you are not the recipient of what it implies.
On the other hand, if you're a young boy or girl growing up in an often public and confusing world, struggling to understand why you're attracted to people of the same sex and through no fault of your own, you may not find it quite so funny that the perception of your sexuality is considered wrong. You and your team are using language that reinforces that, and it causes unnecessary pain to other people.
"..which I now pass easily thanks to fitting the GAY silencer"
"..so I tried to stop being such a gay twat"
"I’d lost the gayness of my braking points"
Out of interest, if you have young children, what do you think they'd feel going to school if their first names were used in the same context instead of the word 'gay'? Do you think that might be harming to their self-confidence or self-worth? Does that help you understand why language is more powerful than you've realised up till now?
The words you use reinforce ideas you hold and project ideas onto other people. You are in a position where what you write is seen publicly by thousands, and more so you're doing it thanks to our money. There's a responsibility not to abuse that power, and not to use that power to be abusive. I've been a fan from the very first version of Carmageddon you released all those years ago and I instantly signed up to the Kickstarter when it launched. Withdrawing my funding in itself will not make any difference whatsoever to how the finished game turns out, but I will not allow my money to be used to support a company which thinks it's acceptable to use language which belongs in the past. More so that you fail to accept the impact it has on other people - even if you don't agree with it.
No-one is right all the time, and this is one you're wrong on. Please examine the views you hold and reconsider, or I'll very sadly have to investigate if I can get my money back - because this is something I don't want to be a part of.
Creator Stainless Games on June 7
By "Me" in that previous comment, I mean me, nobby. (Damn the lack of editing facility on these comments!) :)
Creator Stainless Games on June 7
We've been checking your comments on the forum following the latest blog entry from Patrick - which as you're all aware wasn't about the progress being made on the game. It's a shame that some Backers were disappointed that this update wasn't news on game progress, because we all thought that the Radical track day was an interesting/fun story, and indirectly tied into the game from the point of view of showing that we "practice what we develop" here at Stainless by having hobbies that relate to our day-job (for instance, I like nothing more than spending my weekends chasing cows across fields in my tank). It also demonstrates how we can market the game for only small amounts of money (by which I mean, the cost of covering his personal car in a load of Carmageddon vinyls), because when Patrick does inevitably stuff the car into the armco at 140mph, the resultant video is bound to be a viral sensation!
I can assure everyone that there are game progress updates in the pipeline and due imminently. Patrick mentioned in a recent interview the reason why there haven't been any for a while (the full interview is here: http://riotpixels.com/carmageddon-reincarnation-interview-original/). As he said, "We are re-writing our rendering engine in order to provide a state-of-the-art look to the game, so this means that the artists are currently having to grey-box everything. When the rendering-engine is ready, the whole game will suddenly spring into life." This work has taken some time, but is nearing completion, and we will have some sexy new stuff for you all very soon, believe me!
I can also reveal exclusively to our Backers that we will also be spending more time on Community and Backer related comms from now on, thanks to recent reorganisation and appointments here at Stainless which will allow me to concentrate more on Stainless Games' role as a self-publishing developer.

Android version on my G2X is working near-perfectly. Had one odd crash, but my phone itself has been touchy. Can't wait for the new title (p.s. touch controls blooooowwwww).

I found part of my answer hidden in updates. lol They received an increased budget for the game, and extended the project further and will take the best part of 2013 to complete. How about Beta access? I need to check the forums more often, or its needs to be more specific in updates.
Creator Pixelcandy on May 17
Any updates on when the game will be released? or beta access?
Creator Tim Breemersch on May 13
I (and several other users) have reported issues with the current version of the Android app (promo version). It seems to occur mainly on Samsung's I9100 (SGS2), where the game crashes (phone freezes) a few seconds into the race. Everything works fine on my other Android device.
Are there going to be updates to fix this?
Creator Frogacuda on May 11
Yes, the Android/iOS version does have graphical improvements beyond the 3DFX DOS version. Most notably, the cars are reskinned and there's actual lighting and shading in the environments when there wasn't in the original (only fog).
Creator Nils on May 10
The Android app is excellent! What will happen to this promo app on the play store? If you are going to remove it then we are not able to receive any updates (if that is the plan anyway for the android version).
Creator Robert on May 10
Congrats for releasing the Android version of Carmageddon. Will the Android version support USB controllers? I have a Android HDMI stick which thus has no touch screen to control the car.
Creator Patrick on May 10
Just installed the Android version and it is simply GREAT. Does everything the 'desktop' version did and performs amazing on my aging Galaxy S 1. Bring on the Splat Pack! :)
Also: hard to see on a small screen, but it seems to me the new mobile version actually looks *better* than the current DOSBox version with glide wrapper... The resolution seems higher. If so, I would be happy to see a build of this for PC in the future as well...
Creator Wiley on May 10
Sweeeeeet! Thanks for releasing Carmageddon on Android! That intro really brings back the memories! And, for my money, the best physics engine ever. Driving on the moon has never been more realistic!

The email was meant to say Friday 10th May - not March! Sorry for the confusion! Hopefully you'll have seen all the download links in the rest of the email and already playing it on your Android devices!

Do donors get the Android version free if they donated in the 100+$ range? Or do we have to camp the store May 10th?

The android version will be published on Friday May 10th on Google Play and will be free for 24 hours.

Yes I would strongly prefer if they took tme to polish. If it looks or feels like "Carmageddon TDR" then it needs more work. So more like Carmageddon 2 less like Carmageddon TDR

I personally don't care if they need more time to get this together. A year ago this game wasn't even on the table for us - I can wait longer. What purpose does crowd-funding have if not to allow these creative guys breathing space to do their thing - with less pressure and bean counting by publishers. In the end this sort of model puts their personal reputations on the line and given how passionate people like Nobby are I think we're in good hands.

I just hope they'll get it all finished this year like they promised. And I also hope the pedestrian models and especially the blood get a rework (that video was Alpha footage, right?)
