A documentary exploring the ways in which people connect and communicate through dance.
Hello there! My name is Stacey. Welcome to my Kickstarter page! Thank you for taking the time to look over my project!
I've been given the amazing opportunity to work as a media intern in Ghana, West Africa beginning on June 22nd, 2013. For six weeks I will be fully immersed in the Ghanian culture, interacting and communicating through English, Twi, and—of course—dance.
Movement is the most basic and universal form of communication. Through dance we are able to transcend all language barriers and limitations of verbal communication. Not only is dance a joyful experience, but there is also a vulnerability and honesty about movement that can make sharing it with others an incredible communal experience.
My goal is to make a documentary which explores Ghanian dance culture. My main focus will be Azonto, a relatively new dance that emerged from Ghana in the early 2000s. Azonto has evolved from a basic dance used to communicate what one does in their community, to a vigorous dance that has become increasingly popular in both nightlife and street culture. I want to dive into the world of Azonto and discover how it has shaped modern Ghanian culture, especially the ways in which it brings people together through the shared experience of dance.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Travelling, especially to a developing country, is something that I have always wanted to do. While I consider myself to be a highly adaptable person, I know that my trip to Ghana will challenge me in unexpected and exciting ways. I welcome these challenges because I know that they will enrich my experience and allow me to grow as an individual.
I hope to gain everything that I possibly can from my experience abroad. I know that it will expand my sense of self and allow me to relate to the global community in new ways. If I am presented with any obstacles or challenges while I am abroad, I will do what I need to do to tackle them in a creative way. Growing up, my mother always told me, "Mistakes are magnificent opportunities for invention." It is with this same sense of resourcefulness and positive outlook that I will overcome any challenges that come my way.
