'The Art of Lilith' is a unique, beautiful art book highlighting the production art and the making of the indie horror film 'Lilith'.

Making indie films in today's economic environment is tough. Making a micro-budget indie horror film that draws upon the artistic influences of filmmakers like Dario Argento, Michelangelo Antonioni and Andrei Tarkovsky should be next to impossible. But we did it all in the indie feature film Lilith starring Julia Voth (Bitch Slap) and written, produced and directed by yours truly, Sridhar Reddy.

When I conceived of Lilith I knew I wanted to do something completely different, to root it in deep artistic influences. Aside from its literary reference - the film is a loose adaptation of Dante's Inferno - my collaborators and I drew upon some of our favorite artists of our generation, including the aforementioned filmmakers, photographer Bill Henson, comic book artists like Bill Sienkiewicz and Paul Pope, and countless musicians from Bauhaus all the way to Lil'Wayne. No stone was left unturned.

For the promotion of the film I wanted to get back to the classic painted posters of the 50s, 60s and 70s, like the iconic Hitchcock posters by Saul Bass or the wonderful kitschy posters of Italian giallo ('yellow') horror films. To do this I enlisted twelve of the most acclaimed artists working today, and commissioned twelve unique posters, one for each chapter in the film.

The artists range from young prodigies like Cam Floyd, Mia Calderone and MANZUR, to established comic book veterans like JOCK. There are some contemporary masters of their craft like Eric Fortune, Caitlin Hackett and Aron Weisenfeld (all featured in the pages of magazines like Hi-Fructose and Juxtapoz) and graphic masterminds like Kristina Collantes (a sample of her poster is in the Kickstarter project image above).

With all this art, it became readily apparent that I needed to collect all of it in one beautiful volume, and include in it the amazing production design concept work from the film (done by my production designer, Kristen Adams (http://www.kristen-adams.com), and my art director, Eric Morrell (http://eric-morrell.com). I also wanted to put in my shooting script that was used during the shoot, which contains extensive notes, hand-painted storyboards, and drawings. I want to put in extensive, exclusive text that is not found on the popular Tumblr blog for the film (http://lilithfilm.tumblr.com).  The book would be come a legitimate art artifact, with the quality of a Taschen or Phaidon collectible.

In all it's an attempt to bring the art back to independent cinema, and to give viewers a chance to get into the minds of the people who created this very special film. I wish I could afford to do all this publishing on my own - art books are an expensive endeavor, as I have to pay the artists, high quality printing, photos, etc.. -  but alas I've poured every penny I have into the creation of the film. Enter Kickstarter, and a glimmer of hope for this special and heartfelt project to become a reality. Your support would not only help Lilith find a wider, appreciative audience beyond film, but you will also be supporting independent art in its purest form! Thank you so much for reading and for your support. Please tell your friends!

FAQ

  • The printing costs for hardbound art books are very high, given that art pieces, storyboards and photos require the highest quality printing and resolution. Funds will also go towards the distribution of the book to specialty art and film outlets as well as art, film and design museums and schools.

  • No. Part of the experience in the design of the book will be to reinforce tactile feelings - I want to use different paper stocks. Reading the book should inculcate a feeling of opening an old treasure chest or unearthing an ancient text. It's intended to deliver an experience, and not just information.

  • No. The funds raised for the book are completely independent of the film production and its distribution. It's meant to be a collectible for the fans and supporters of the film.
