Avant Gore is a small collection that weaves together couture fashion, horror movies and supportive undergarments.
The Avant Gore mini-collection is going to be a showcase piece. It is going to be my crowning achievement and a culmination of all of the skills I have learned over the years independently and through formal education.
In my senior collection class we are required to come up with an original concept using a variety of sources. The concept is supposed to represent the individual designer's interests as well as goals for the future. The collection is a marriage between my passion for avant garde couture fashion and classic horror films. Class criteria stipulates we create three ensembles; however, I feel for my collection to be complete it requires an additional look. One might worry that I am being overly ambitious, but I am confident I can accomplish my goals by obtaining the necessary materials. Aesthetically, these garments require an immense amount of hand detailing. This includes creating the supportive undergarments (the hoop skirt and bustle cage) to achieve the ambience of the overall look.
I've spent over half a decade as a competition costumer which required me to create a likeness of a character concept, and have won several awards for my construction abilities. In addition, skills have been further honed by creating victorian-recreation outfits and constructing historically accurate corsets to measure.
That said, I plan to tackle this project in a few stages:
Presently, I am working with a combination of models and dress forms to take measurements in order to start creating the understructures. Upon completion, pattern making begins October 3rd. During this phase, I will be purchasing all the necessary textiles; the properties vary depending on the fabric. The paper patterns will be cut out and sewn into a mock up fabric, then tweaked to fit the models/dress forms. This process will replay until the desired fit is achieved. My enthusiasm for pattern making will hopefully grow in to a true profession one day.
Moving forward, an immense amount of sewing will begin. This includes hand sewing, beadwork, embroidery, screen printing, and etc. A considerable amount of my time, including late nights, will go in to this aspect of the journey. Since all of the patterns will be tested prior to this stage, fit sessions will not necessarily be needed during the sewing process.
A professional photo shoot is a must for the entire collection to come alive. I not only desire a satisfactory grade in the end, but also a showcase piece. I am hoping to create a positive reputation for not only myself, but also the live models and fellow students striving to become professional hair and/or makeup artists and photographers.
Obviously the finances are crucial for any endeavor, and for my vision to be fully depicted I am aiming to work with top-quality materials. I would also enjoy contributing to those aiding my aspirations. So often "student work" goes unpaid, even if the work is just as demanding as professional work.
For all of the reasons listed above, I am reaching out to the Kickstarter community for their aid and support.
