About this project

You Meet the Nicest People Making Videogames is to be a documentary about everyday people who express themselves by making videogames. “To be”, because at the moment, this movie hasn’t completed production, and doesn’t have the funding to do so. Everything you see in the trailer above, and everything I’ve shot since, was made with borrowed equipment, on my own time and my own dime. I’ve been working on it, in the margins, since January of last year, getting interviews whenever I could.

It’s gone well so far, and I’d like to do more. My plan is to drive cross country, film some more interviews and put together a feature-length documentary. This feature, I’ll have screened in any theater that’ll have it, and throughout the festival circuit. It’ll also be free to download an watch at home, or to modify or share, as it’ll be released under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license (CC-BY-SA - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/us/).

I've made a couple different attempts at funding the continued production of this movie, and although I've gotten a great deal of support, I haven't quite been able to hit my funding goal. I'd since taken the time to work on a few other smaller projects to keep the lights on, but now I am ready to get back on the horse.

This particular fundraiser isn't to cover the entirety of production, but to cover equipment costs and the drive across the state of California. I will begin filming in April and keep a blog on my progress on the road. Once this leg is completed, I'll put together a short film as a longform proof of concept to garner further support so the movie in its entirety can be finished. This video, just like the feature length, will be freely available online under the Creative Commons CC-BY-SA license.

My name is La Mar "spinach" Williams II, and my attraction to journalism has everything to do with me being heavily drawn to people who make things -- craftworks, illustrations, music, games -- anything. I've worked in videojournalism off and on over the last decade. I've been known to play a videogame on occasion.
