About this project
Presented by the grassroots Detroit based non-profit Friends of Spaulding Court, Soup at Spaulding aims to raise the capacity and profile of remarkable Detroit based groups by helping them find the funding they need. We hold monthly fundraisers where funds are split between rehab efforts at Spaulding Court and groups and projects with broad based support.
One of those groups is Heritage Works, a Corktown based non-profit that enriches the lives of young and old through African drum, dance, fashion and culture. They run programs across the city and uplift thousands of lives with their teaching and performances.
This summer, their intensive fashion and dance-centric day camp lacks funding to provide basic materials to the participants. The dance, drama and urban fashion camp is a collaboration between Heritage Works, the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and the College for Creative Studies. The 8 week day camp culminates in a Dance-A-Thon where kids will show off what they've been up to (Wanna go? Check out the rewards).
This campaign will fully fund material costs for the camp so that motivated youth aren't turned away due to their economic situation.
Funds pledged to this campaign will be divided like this:
60% - Heritage Works - to purchase materials for participants in their summer camp
~30% - Friends of Spaulding Court - for direct construction costs of housing and public space at Spaulding Court
5% - Kickstarter - for maintaining this platform
~5% - Amazon - For handling the dollar end of things
Many thanks to the Kresge Foundation for supporting the production of this video.
Here's a student production taken this Spring of Heritage Works playing at our winter Soup location.
