The Spare Room Project Oaxaca is an artist-in-residency program, a cultural exchange program, and a short-term hostel all under one Mexican roof.
Erin M and Laura S are getting a compound in the hills surrounding Oaxaca proper where they will create a crazy environment combining artists from around the world, international travelers searching for new cultures, and the community surrounding the property, all wanting to exchange ideas....
The Spare Room Project Oaxaca (SRPO) will work in three ways:
First, it will allow ARTISTS an opportunity to have a fully-funded residency in Oaxaca, which will culminate with a solo show in a local gallery created by Gustavo Soriano, Tinoco y Palacios, and a write up GuGuDaDa magazine which is printed in Mexico City and distributed internationally. The artists will be both international and local, and will all have a certain skill-set that they will present to the community through skill-shares and workshops. The first artists will be primarily those who have knowledge and experience around sustainable building and systems,ie . green carpentry, green roofs, grey water, rainwater harvesting, etc., or specialize in a certain area of art such as fibers, printmaking, photography, so that they can help to create the physical space and different studios that will make up the property.
Second: COMMUNITY. The SPRO will provide space for skill-shares hosted by either people in the community or residents of the SPRO. For instance, we will have an-ongoing language exchange program minimally involving Spanish and English, as well as youth and adult programs including photo-journalism projects, sustainable urban gardening, and bicycle maintenance classes. We will also host weekly movie screenings. Community members will be able to lead workshops in Oaxacan cooking, traditional art and craft methods, and Spanish classes, etc.
Lastly, the SRPO will also include a hostel for short term residency. We want to encourage TRAVELERS to explore places while concurrently contributing to and learning from the local community. These travelers can take part in the language exchange that we offer, as well as contribute to other forms of cultural exchange. This part of our program gives travelers a way to interact in a new environment without blindly walking through it.
The SPRO will be a merging of various worlds, many of which haven't been dreamed yet. But some worlds we do know. We know that it will foster a connection between its sister gallery, The Spare Room Project (San Francisco), and the local Tinoco y Palacios gallery, where SRPO artists will have their shows. It's really the perfect merging, as Erin currently runs the already existing Spare Room Project San Francisco. She has a large community of people in San Francisco ready to see the project expand in new and exciting ways, and what better way than to form a connection with Oaxaca? The SRPO will allow some of the San Francisco community, amongst many others, a chance to create projects and participate in cultural exchanges in a Oaxaca. Laura is already working with the Tinoco y Palacios gallery in Oaxaca, and has a large group of Oaxacan artists ready and excited to participate in the SRPO. So we're almost all set. Except...
We need funding to initiate the backbones of the SRPO, so that we are able to rent the space that we need for at least a year, while supporting artists from the community and from abroad. We hope that the SRPO will grow into a self-sufficient entity, especially as we set up sustainable systems and have travelers coming through, but at first, we need to lay down the basic foundation. Contributing to our project will allow for all sorts of beneficial exchanges and creative minds to come out of the woodwork and make magic happen, and it will guarantee you a wonderful spot to stay in the next time you find yourself in Oaxaca. We promise!!
