Update #8: Poll outcome

Posted on October 11, 2009

Hey all,

So we have finished the survey on what the ticket pricing structure should be. It was important for us to get your feedback as you are the ones who have already donated. Ordinarily, we would have just made a decision and stuck with is – but you guys have already supported us with your donations, so we wanted to hear your feedback.

Some of you (the very early voters) may not be aware that we added an additional option to make all tickets $10 on the door.

This option actually won, especially when you take into consideration the “friendly” option which was next most popular and kind of similar.

As such we have decided that we will be making the door price $10. These tickets will however ONLY be available at the door for $10 and only from 8:30 (after “Reformat the Planet”). People still need to kickstart to see RtF - that's your reward as backers!

We hope this is a decision will keep all our punters happy and that it encourages you all to bring your friends along. Hopefully you can all take this opportunity to encourage your mates to come see the amazing lineup of artists; as a line up of little-scale, dot.AY, CTrix and sparkyboy does not come along every day (and as we’ve said before this will be Sparkyboy’s only show while he’s in town and we’ve been trying to get CTrix on a bill for quite some time) these guys are going to be amazing and we can’t wait to see you all there!

As always, thanks for your support

Kristy and Eugene

PS – we’ll be trying to update all the online advertising over the next few days – but make sure you let people know cover charge’s now $10

Update #6: So where is the money going?

Posted on October 11, 2009

Thinking about it yesterday, we realised that some of you would probably be interested to know what exactly the money you are contributing towards SoundBytes will be spent on. Most people think that gigs are relatively inexpensive to run... and in some cases, you'd be right, but we wanted to make it clear where the money goes.

As you no doubt know, the original figure we were looking for was $700 US. That was allocated to cover a portion of the flights for the Australian artists and sound equipment, of course we have surpassed our goal, but at the same time, we aimed low as we don't get anything unless we make over our $700 target and basically something was better than nothing! :) (We also didn't plan on getting Sparkyboy to play!)

So what will your money go towards?

the big expense was flights. Artists have always flown themselves into town. We have always tried to give them a little something for their troubles/expenses, but have never been able to afford the whole of the airfares required. This time around, we have paid for all flights.

This means, One Brisbane - Melbourne return (dot.AY), one Adelaide - Melbourne Return (little-scale), one Sydney - Melbourne return (Dr. $$ AKA Cool Thomas, AKA 10K) and one Perth - Melbourne return for Sparkyboy - fortunately we haven't had to pay for his ticket all the way from South Africa. In total these flights have come to just over $1150 Australian (the credit card's been taking a beating while we wait for funding to go through!)

In addition to this, we have the sound system/equipment hire that comes in at around $300 - We actually got an AMAZING deal!(So running tally is $1450 for those of you at the back of the class).

Then there's the incidentals. Everyone stays at our place when we run gigs (well for the most part) which means there is driving around (petrol/citylink), there is food and drinks, both over the time they're in own and on the night of the gig. A conservative estimate is about $200.

That's $1650 Australian ($1485 USD at the current exchange rate). There are of course other bits and pieces, to consider like we lose part of all donations in fees from Amazon, and as the Australian dollar goes up, the donations aren't worth as much to us either (I never though I'd be upset the Aussie dollar was so strong!). Of course, these things aren't the biggest priority, but they do add up. We just wanted a little something extra to go towards the gigs so none of the artists were out of pocket.

Yes, there will be door sales, so if we don't make more off kickstarter, then we'll still be able to cover the extra cash that hasn't been pledged yet. Anything additional will be put into future gigs (rather than paying up debts we've accumulated running the past ones!) we don't expect to make a profit out of Soundbytes and that was never the intention. We just want to put on the best parties we can so we thank you for helping us to do this. You guys really are awesome. We hope this gig will be the best ever to make it worth your pledges!

Update #4: I'm not coming alone!

Posted on October 5, 2009

We have been asked by people how they can pledge to get more that one invite to see ‘Reformat the Planet’. To be honest, it wasn’t something we were thinking about however, it really is a pretty obvious question really. Stupid us! :) Anyway, this is what we have in mind.

If you want more than a single ticket, please pledge an additional $13 for each additional ticket after your initial pledge. If you wanted, for example, to pledge for the $52 pledge, but needed two tickets, you would need to pledge $65 against the $52 reward .($52 + $13). You would only get one t-shirt, keyring etc, but two tickets. If you just wanted two of the $13 pledges (just for entry and SB5 download) then you would pledge $26 for that pledge (and not $26 against say the $17 tier for example). Basically, to receive entry for more than one person, there needs to be an additional $13 pledge for each attendee (if you've already pledged and wanted more than one ticket, send us a message and we'll work something out)

If you could click “Send message” in the bottom right and advise us that that is why you have pledged additional funds, that will help us ensure we know numbers for the screening. We will confirm with you at the end of the pledge drive how many tickets you needed as well.

Hope this makes sense, any questions, send us a message and we’ll get back to you ASAP J

It addition to this we have settled times for the screening. Screening will start at 7pm sharp, with entry for non-pledgers from 8:30. Additional info regarding set times will be available a little closer to the date.

Thanks again for all your support

Kristy and Eugene

yep yep, you hit the nail on the head. That's exactly why I pledged as much as I did, I wanted two tickets. It was a logic puzzle, and it looks like I solved it!

sorry i just pledged $26 for a friend and I, but i don't see the 'send a message' button.
      i would like two tickets.

Update #3: So what are we doing with your extra cash?

Posted on October 3, 2009

Okay, so we have obviously beat our target and we promised that we would have a better gig if we beat our target.
So what have we done you ask?
First off, we have booked the best sound system we've had to date. Now, first of all you have to know, we don't skimp on sound. We get a pretty decent system, and have had to stop using in house sound at the venue, as it just can't keep up with us (No, seriously, we blew some speakers) but one thing we've always wanted to have at our gigs is a nexo rig... So firstthing we did when we meant funding was go out and book one.

One of the other things we've always wanted to do is get an international on the bill. Sure, we've had Jim Cuomo, who is a legend of chipmusic, but we always planned to get a contemporary artists who is a well known member of the 8-bit scene.

As such, we are very, VERY excited to announce that Sparkyboy out of South Africa is coming to play the gig. That's right your generous support has helped us make this happen. Of course, the extra expense has meant that we aren't quite going to be able to cover our expenses at the moment, but we'll cover any shortfall if required - that said - tell your mates to pledge, get your pledge in early to come and hang out with the artists before the show and see Reformat The Planet" can't wait to see you there!

Soundbytes runs 8-bit/chipmusic gigs in Melbourne, Australia.

We are dedicated to furthering the chipmusic scene and giving the best of Australia's (and hopefully in the future the world's!) chip artists a place to perform, giving the chip loving public a place to come to hear some amazing tracks and have fun nights packed with great music, gaming and a chance to get nostaligic.

Chipmusic is music made with both old and new gaming consoles, and it's a way of reinventing systems like the atari and gameboy that are close to our hearts.

The scene is kind of small in Australia so far, but with your help, it will only get bigger and better.
