Would you consider designing a SoundBender that will work with the new Apple iPad 2/3 case? The current model won't reach far enough to attach or to cup the speaker area.

Ahhh, so it was the MAGNETS! Same problem on my iPad 2. Backwards magnets render the SoundBender virtually useless. I ended up having to cut it up and sugru'd it to my black silicone case. Looks a bit "Jerry-rigged", but it's there for good, like it's part of the case. And it does work. Below is a link to a pic.

Nick, though it looks slightly worse for the wear, it's actually flush and smooth. The magnet doesn't stick up or interfere. Packing tape wouldn't hurt but really wouldn't help either.

As for a Dremel… I would not recommend it. I have never had any luck using a Dremel on plastic. At any speed capable of cutting, all that happens is the plastic melts. It makes more of a mess than it helps. Perhaps I have the wrong bits.

Neil, I wonder if it would be wise to put a piece of packing tape over the area to keep the iPad scratch free and ensure there will be no slippage.

Also, if I were to do it, I think I'd use my dremel and cut the plastic just where the seam is (there's a bump right under the speaker) and pull it/flip it that way.

Happily, since I have two, I'll be able to still use both. Now if only the second wasn't a hot pink color ;)

Got mine today (in Canada) and I can't thank you enough! It's great, just used it to watch a show and it's infinitely better. So much easier to use than the other design I had, fantastic.

I'm baffled at the flipping of the magnets in the new iPad. I passed this Gen and hope they revert it for the 4th gen. If not, I guess it won't be impossible to flip it, I just know I'm a clutz with it and would like to keep all my fingers ;)

I was able to modify my SoundBander to work with the New iPad (iPad 3). I did this by flipping the magnet over.

Using an X-ACTO knife I scored the inside edge of the plastic that covers the magnet. I did this right at the seam near the speaker icon (see image below). I then scored another line exactly across the middle of the magnet. Right through the center of the circle cutout. Sliding the X-ACTO blade under the plastic between the two lines allowed me to remove the slice.

Using a screwdriver, I carefully pressed the magnet out from the underside through the circular cutout. I broke my magnet in half which I'm sad about, however, I think this could be done without doing so.

I then replaced the magnet upside-down. The slit I made is the perfect size to get the magnet out but leaves enough friction to keep it in once reinserted.

Lastly, I used the X-ACTO blade to removed some burs and generally clean things up. The end result is as expected. It just works.

Both of the red SoundBenders were fine on my iPad2, but were repelled by the iPad3. As mentioned in my previous post, cutting, flipping the magnet, and reinserting the magnet allowed the SoundBender to stay inplace on the 3rd gen iPad.

As per Gen3SF's comments, both of my Sound Benders work great on my wife's iPad 2, but both flip off of the bottom of my new iPad 3. Did Apple reverse the polarity of magnets in the top of the speaker inside some or all iPad 3s? Is this something random or planned in the new iPads as per whatever they did with the magnets? Does this have to do with the magnet in the SoundBender itself (as per polarity)? In the meantime, one Soundbender will work with my wife's iPad 2, and the other SoundBender will have to be modified in order for it to work on my iPad 3 as did Gen3SF. I would appreciate it if other SoundBender owners would respond with comments and let us all know how your SoundBenders are working with iPad 2 and iPad 3 and if you are having the same magnet issues.

My SoundBender kept popping off my New iPad. I looked and saw the curvature fit of the SoundBender on the iPad 2 and new iPad appeared close enough not to be the source of the problem. It helped reading John Beasant III had no such problem- thanks. I identified the problem as being due to the magnet polarity. After I carefully cut the magnet out of my lovely red SoundBender :( , flipped and then reinserted the magnet, problem solved.
