It's March. How Close Am I to Getting My SmartThings?
All right, it’s March 1st. We’re as anxious as you are and continue to work around the clock across every member of our growing team. That's now 32 of us, all working to ship your SmartThings! Here are the most recent details.

SmartThings Mobile
We’ve been adding lots of finishing touches to the mobile experience, including a Getting Started Experience to guide you through setup, embedded video tutorials on how to best use SmartThings, bits and pieces like registration and password reset, and fully integrated support (including in-app chat - our support team will be with you every step of the way!). With all of these important changes complete, we resubmitted the iOS version yesterday (Feb 28) and are hoping for approval by Apple within 6 days. Android is following close behind, but likely won’t be submitted until April. We’re recruiting to add more Android developers to speed this up if at all possible, so if you know someone awesome, send them our way via jobs@smartthings.com.

Electronics
The final panelization and then test runs from manufacturing took a few iterations to get it perfect for mass production. With that done, our manufacturer is accelerating all components and PCBs to try and get as many produced in March as possible, and we’re funding some expedite charges to do our part. Simultaneously, we’re working with our original prototype engineering firm to produce smaller quantities such that we have inventory coming from every angle.

Enclosures
Every nanometer matters. We’ve gone through 2-3 iterations of samples from the production molds, adjusting minute details in response to drop-tests, assembly tests and production quality assurance. At this point, we are waiting for a final version of the SmartTag enclosure and the top half of the motion enclosure. By next week, we expect to place orders for all enclosure volumes. They come 10 days after that.

Packaging
All of our packaging is done and in our warehouse!

Developer IDE
We will release the IDE publicly around March 15th. We hosted a first hack day in Washington, DC on February 9th with great response. Read about it here: http://misterdude.com/smart-things-getting-smarter/

Additional Things
We continue to validate new connected devices on our platform. We will provide a cleaner version of this list, but you can see it here: http://build.smartthings.com/compatible-devices/

Many backers will receive their kits in March but we are limited in production volumes until the later part of the month. We’ll be hosting a series of hand-delivery events in the coming weeks, hopefully in multiple cities. At these events we’ll be delivering kits to small groups of backers, getting their feedback on the experience, and continuing to improve the SmartThings product in response.
Our first event is next Thursday, March 7th in Minneapolis. Our next event is in Northern California on Wednesday, March 13th. Dallas and NYC, be on the lookout.
We know each of you is anxious to get your kit. If you are in the US or CA it will be in March or April. You'll receive an email from us with your tracking number as soon as it leaves our warehouse. Please be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all of our updates and news.
As always, we thank everyone for their support. SmartThings is creating the open platform for the Internet of Things, which is a big undertaking, but one the world needs. Your backing has made this possible!

I am no longer waiting patiently. You took my money in September, promised delivery in December and here it is March 23rd. When will you deliver?
Creator William Bennett on March 16
Any info on the Dallas Event?
Creator David Proctor on March 8
Where is the Northern California March 13th event? Do I need an invite?
Creator Caleb Wong on March 8
so besides the hub, are all the Things working in different freq.? So different country won't be the same as well?
and will international have lauch parties as well :p ?
Creator Cory Simpson on March 6
@Tom, regardless of what Kickstarter decides to call it is micro crowd sourced venture capitol investing. I'm not sure how what I said could come across as egotistical...
Creator SmartThings on March 6
@Hannes this is Alex - we'll be posting an update for international backers shortly. We're close to moving into the process of CE certification which will take a while but will give us coverage for a very large number of countries. The primary source of the delay is the regulatory differences in transmission strength which require different communications chips and antennas in every Thing type. Ultimately, we remain fully committed to international..."making the world smarter, together" means just that and not exclusively the U.S. and Canada :-)
Creator Paul Monroy on March 6
I had to wait 9 months for my daughters to be born and couldn't be happier. So a little longer wait for my SmartThings isn't something that I'm going to stress about......jj. Where's my SmartThings?? I want to control my house. :-) Keep up the good work. Really looking forward to that package coming soon. :-)
Creator Hannes Schaufler on March 6
It has been said a lot already but: What about international backers.
I'm very disappointed that we are just ignored in the recent news.
Even if the "news" for us would be: we're delaying for another 3 months", it would still be better than the feeling that we're utterly unimportant for the makers.
Creator Arnold Wong on March 6
Is the Northern California event open to the public or just for developers/makers?
Creator Adam Krapish on March 5
Can't wait to hear when the NYC event is. It will be awesome to not only get my kit but also meet some other people looking to build some smartthings.
Creator Tom Ryan on March 5
There's very specific reasons why Kickstarter's TOS do not refer to us as "investors" but "backers." I'm fairly sure few Kickstarter backers are accredited investors, which grant specific rights to the company selling its securities and the investor.
But if you want to think of yourself as some kind of venture capitalist tycoon for spending a few hundred bucks, feel free. Just realize that your belief does not make it so.
@Smart Things, looking forward to a very cool product. Keep up the good work!
Creator Cory Simpson on March 5
Thanks Alex, it sounds like you basically confirmed what I said earlier in that it is better to have a polished done right product and take a time hit, then a rushed to market product that only works if you stand on one foot, and jump around in circles.
Creator SmartThings on March 5
@Cory and @Chris - this is Alex. I hear you both and the others and really appreciate your patience. We believe that we are very close to having the baseline platform ready to ship in greater volumes and will continue to be transparent at every step. The two big issues have been 1) a conscious choice I drove back in December to revamp every Thing with a dramatically amplified radio to stand out from the crowd in terms of range and provide an "it just works" reliability in a wide range of environments. 2) manufacturing complexities along the way as we refine the enclosures and the custom programming/testing equipment that we need in order to produce the devices en masse. From everything that we can tell, we are near the finish line with fully certified amplified devices and improved enclosures in hand, and fully customized and automated testing and programming tools arriving in a couple of weeks. We are beginning to roll out shipments of manually programmed and tested kits in advance of that, and will then shift gears into much higher volumes. From there, it will be an effort across all of us to drive new SmartApps and types of Things into the open platform to make the world steadily smarter. Thank you for hanging tight and supporting us as our team cranks away on every element required to make the full SmartThings vision a reality.
Creator Josh Renner on March 4
I would love to attend the Minneapolis event. Is there a way to sign up for it?
Creator Cory Simpson on March 4
@Tim, it's an investment as we are investing in a company to get a device, and it is very stacked in the companies favor. We are basically venture capitol for SmartThings, except instead of a high risk/ high reward payout we get a 200 dollarish product that we could had just waiting a few months and bought anyway. We accepting the same risk (micro version)as a venture capitol investor, with not nearly the reward.
I am not saying there is really anything wrong with that, we knew it going in. It's just my reply to the people that cry "kickstarter is not a store" No, it's not....but that doesn't mean they are not accountable to their investors.
Either way from what I have seen it looks like SmartThings is much closer to their estimated delivery date than many other kickstarters that over promised and under delivered. I just wish for once someone would under promise and over deliver.
Creator Chris B on March 3
Sorry Vincent, but I don't agree 100% with you. Yes, I understand fully that this isn't an online store and that we're backing a product that isn't even made yet. I understand that it's a "reward" not a purchase.
But I also believe that 99% or more of kickstarters aren't done purely to 'help.' We pledge because we want the reward. I fully expect there to be delays. As I mentioned, this is isn't a product that even exists yet. However, we're now working on three months, and the Android software isn't due out until April now. Furthermore International backers are even further out.
Please don't mis-understand. I'm still very excited about this product. I'm really looking forward to it and am not even slightly thinking of "jumping ship." But I also don't think it's out of line for backers to hold the project creators to some level of accountability and expect results.
It's still only a few months late, and I'm not screaming angry or anything, but I am a bit bummed and will be more so if we hear of delays again later.
Creator Tim Groenwals on March 3
Any news on the certifications for the international backers ? Kind of disappointed in the communication for us.
Creator Scott Heckel on March 3
@Cory how is it an investment?
Keep up the good work smart things team. Can't wait.
Creator DQVST on March 3
@Vincent Dascher, I agree but the funding campaign did not differentiate between US and Non-US dollars, but the product, the updates, the delivery, and anything else do! It is extremely disappointing to read about events, hackatons and so on that are not part of core product development and not a single mention on international delivery progress. It paints a picture of a team that has forgotten their core obligations and are swimming around in a big pile of party-money... Hopefully not true, but this is what they are communicating... I can accept well-reasoned delays, but delays due to procrastination and lack of focus on the job they have committed to, when they opened up for international dollars are unacceptable! That is what disappoints me...
Creator CK on March 3
I'm wondering besides regulation approval, is there any difference in terms of hardware between US and international version?
May I know how can I estimate the total shipping weight?
Creator Cory Simpson on March 2
It may not be a store, but there are still delivery expectations. It is an investment, not a donation.
Creator Krista O'Malley on March 2
I'm in MSP too, any chance to get on the Minneapolis event?
Creator Vincent Dascher on March 2
A lot of people here forget that Kickstarter is NOT an online store... There can and often will be delays !
When I support a project I do it because I wanna help, and if I get a reward I pledged for then good... But I don't expect to have the same delivery delays as for existing products..
Just wait and complain if/when you don't get it... not because it's late. If you can't do that then leave Kickstarter and go to online stores to get your things in time.
Creator Cory Simpson on March 2
I too am starting to get a little annoyed with the delays. But, I came into this expecting them. I would also much rather have a well built solid product, than a rushed to market one in the long run.
Creator Vagelis Fragkos on March 2
Unfortunately there wasn't any info on international backers.I think you should come up with an update otherwise there should be a refund option as "Constantinos Griponisiotis" (assumingly from Greece,as me!) mentioned.
Creator Pierre Lemperiere on March 2
Not a word for us international backers ! :(
Come on guys, let us know how things are moving or not.
Creator Constantinos Griponisiotis on March 2
Is there anyway to get refunded? We were supposed to get the device on December 2012 and on every update there is a new delay..
Creator Rince on March 2
I am also disappointed that there is no word for the international backers aka Enthusiasts. Will there be an update for us? Like, when will we be see the smartthings package, will we be able to use and learn with the SDK, when will we see how many things we really fetch and which one we can choose?
Creator DQVST on March 1
Not even a single comment on international delivery - you were happy to take my $500 but apparently that was all you cared about non-US backers. This Enthusiast is extremely disappointed! :(
Creator Cade Goldenberg on March 1
Wish I had known about the DC event, that's where I live. Can't wait to get my hands on SmartThings, it will go well with the stuff I already have setup including my large collection of Philips Hue bulbs. Can't wait to have the lights flash a color when events happen!
Creator Brian W on March 1
Put me down for Minneapolis if there is room!
Creator Chris B on March 1
Well, I'm very excited for my stuff to be delivered. But, I am a bit disappointed by the new delays. I was expecting at least two months but it's looking more like three or more... and I'm disappointed that the Android app might not be available until after the kits start shipping. I'd really hoped to be able to use my phone and tablets right away.
Creator Yoni Shechter on March 1
Is there a way to check you have the correct address for shipping? I don't remember the last time you verified our shipping addresses, and specifically, I moved to a new location on February 1st. Thanks
Creator Ben Adamson on March 1
Ditto, middleca, how do we get ourselves on the guest list for this Minneapolis event??
Creator Ingo on March 1
I'm ready for the NYC pickup event!
Creator Logan Brown on March 1
Why not host a pickup event in DC since you guys are in NOVA?
Creator middleca on March 1
Awesome, hey I'm in Minneapolis, who can I bribe to come to the event?
Creator Travis Snoderly on March 1
Yay! How about a Portland event? :)
Creator Edgar on March 1
Any news to International backers?
Creator William Clements on March 1
Woohoo! I'm excited! Thanks for all of your hard work!
Creator Caleb Wong on March 1
Yeah! Waited long! Thanks to the team.
