Open Call for Animators!
We're extending a worldwide "open call" to independent, freelance, or small-team animators, to produce very short segments for the feature-length documentary, STRIPPED.
Over 50 animators have already submitted samples, before we even asked for work. ...It kinda blew us away, frankly! But we'd like to formalize that process, to better review everyone's work, and compare apples to apples.
So, with thanks for your enthusiasm, please follow the directions, below, and submit via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com. And do please stick with the numbered, 1-2-3 format, in your submitted e-mail.. Thanks!
1.) Provide a link to an online sample reel of your best-best-best work. Feel free to use any ol' video sharing service to host your reel: YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Just please do not send us the file itself, and please don't make it password-protected or tricky to find on the page.
2.) Your preferred e-mail address and phone number to contact you
3.) Your requested rate for 10-, 30-, or 45-seconds of animation
4.) Two past animation references you'd be comfortable with us contacting
5.) Attach a PDF of your 1-page, animation-focused resume
6.) And if you would, make your e-mail subject heading: STRIPPED ANIMATION SUBMISSION (as that'll let us filter it)
If we think your work will fit the film, and would like to hire you, you'll be assigned a time-block and asked to animate to a certain theme, a chunk of narrative, or a bit of interview dialogue. If you don't hear from us, please don't take it personally! And please do not send follow-ups or 'did you get my e-mail?' e-mails. I promise you, artist-to-artist, we're going to watch every single submission, and weigh them all very carefully.
Thank you for your interest, and for your passion for the project. We appreciate it so much!
Dave 'n Fred
Q: Is there a particular style you're looking for?
A: No, so go ahead and submit your best work, the work you're proudest of.
Q: What resolution/format will you need the final animation in?
A: For the film itself, the file format should be at 1080p resolution at 24fps in Apple ProRes 4:2:2 file format. But for your submitted reel, any ol' format will do.
Q: Why an open call?
A: Because talent shouldn't be limited by geography or who you know in life. If you live in Lithuania, and don't know any other animators, that shouldn't hold you back, if you're a true talent. That being said, if you live in Lithuania, don't know any other animators, and also happen to stink…maybe hold off on that e-mail. :)
Q: Is this a paid job?
Q: What will the rate be?
A: Rates will vary depending on the artist(s), their work(s), their level of experience, and how many seconds they'll be producing.
Q: How will I be paid?
A: Via check, in US dollars, drawn on a California-based bank. (We mention that only because we're going to get international submissions, too, and they need to know how they'll get paid)
Q: I sent you stuff a few weeks back….Should I resend it?
A: Yes, please, following the above directions.
Q: Can I submit to you via the Kickstarter messaging system, or Facebook, or Google+, Twitter, or via 1995 Usenet?
A: *Just* via e-mail to dave@davekellett and firstname.lastname@example.org, if you would, using the above steps. :)
Q: I came here from elsewhere, and/or this block of text has been copy-pasted onto a forum somewhere: What's STRIPPED?
A: STRIPPED is a feature-length documentary bringing together 60 of the world's best cartoonists into one extraordinary film. It sits down with creators to talk about how cartooning works, why it's so loved, and how as artists they're navigating this dicey period between print and digital options...when neither path works perfectly. We want this film to capture the extraordinary people behind the comics you love, to show how they work, and to ask the question: "Where does the art form go from here?"
