Update #11: Expecting albums, new street date

Posted 4 days ago

Hello all project backers....

Thank you for your patience. It's a long haul from funding the project to having it in hand. I have tote bags and t-shirts now and the 7"'s are ready to go. Expecting the albums to arrive mid-June sometime. Revolver is handling the store distribution of this record and their next available street date was August 14th so that's when Ghosts will officially drop. However, I plan to start shipping out the Kickstarter packages when I return from a short west coast tour in July. So, expect to get your vinyl earlier than the street date.

Back catalog records from Jagjaguwar are in. I am placing an order with Team Love for the two back catalog titles there. Still have to screen Umbilical Chords jackets and make prints of drawings. For those of you who ordered the demo cd, I am going to tack on a few extra songs from an old demo tape or two to flesh that out a bit. Will work on that this weekend. This next month will be busy. For updates on my west coast, east coast, and European tours and non-Kickstarter specific album related news, please follow me on Twitter (@simonjoyner1) or find me on Facebook. If you know friends who didn't get a chance to participate in the Kickstarter campaign, I've set up a pre-order page for the new album at simonjoyner.net. I will keep these updates coming as there is more news about shipping out all this stuff.

Thanks again for supporting this project and for your patience.

Update #10: Test Pressings approved, everything in manufacturing now...

Posted on April 28

Just a little update to catch everyone up on the progress. I've received the vinyl test pressings for Ghosts and the jackets have been approved and are being manufactured. I've also approved the test pressing for the bonus 7" and received the double laserdisc lathecut editions of "Umbilical Chords" which a few people chose for their reward package. I want to thank Michael Dixon of People In A Position To Know Records for offering to do the lathecutting of this extremely limited release at cost, just to help out. He's a life-saver.

There is still a lot to do, I need to screen the covers for the lathecuts, I need to screen the limited edition print of one of my drawings, I need to design and print the 7" covers as well. I'm ordering the t-shirts and totes this coming week, designs are turned in. So, everything is moving along and I'm chipping away at things while I wait for the album to ship from the plant. Below is a track list of songs on the new album.

Side One:
Vertigo
Last Will and Testament
Red Bandana Blues
Sing a Little Lullaby

Side Two:
The Tyrant
Will You Stand Up for Me?
Cotes du Rhone
If It's Alright With You (It's Alright With Me) Pt.1

Side Three:
If It's Alright With You (It's Alright With Me) Pt. 2
Answering Machine Blues
Swift River, Run
When the Worst Doesn't Happen

Side Four:
If I Left Tomorrow
The Last Parade
Hard Luck Heart
Please Forgive
Ghost

I will be setting up a page to accept pre-orders for the new record so if you know anyone who didn't get a chance to participate in the Kickstarter campaign, the record can be pre-ordered by contacting me directly at simon@simonjoyner.net. That's it for now, thanks again!

Update #9: Mastering Scheduled for Monday & Other Progress

Posted on March 25

Just a quick update to catch everyone up on the progress. The record will be mastered tomorrow at SAE in Phoenix. Then it goes to RTI for manufacturing with a three month turn around time for release once it arrives. So, we're looking at an early July release date. I'm putting the artwork together this week to send to Stoughton to have the jackets made.

The extra 7" some of you chose as a reward is mastered and will be sent in tomorrow to manufacturing so that ball is rolling too.

Other rewards in need of manufacturing are in process too (t-shirts, totes) but I'm having a difficult time getting the local lathecutter here in Omaha to return my calls about making the handful of "Umbilical Chords" lps, so I may need to find another company to take care of that. It's on my list of things to get done this week, so trust that I haven't forgotten about it.

I will post another update when there is more news to report. Everything is moving along smoothly. Feel free to write with any questions. Thanks again for supporting this big project.

Best regards,

Simon

Update #8: Mixing finished! Off to mastering! Album titled!

Posted on March 8

Just to keep everyone abreast of where the project stands, we finished mixing last weekend, all analog. With crossfades and whatnot, it was a very hands-on process, with three or four reel-to-reel machines going at once. Ben Brodin, the mixing engineer, took a video of the madness with his phone at one point and I will add a clip of it if I'm able. All-manual fading meant every mix was a performance in and of itself. It was a good time, a little like Twister on the mixing console with hands reaching over and under to get to faders according to our assigned roles in the song. Much better than staring at a computer screen to mix a record, in my opinion. Very nice of my friends at ARC Studio to indulge these preoccupations and fantasies of mine.

I'll be packing up the four master reels (one for each side) and sending to Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and he will be mastering and plating the record all-analog as well, so we'll end up with what they call a AAA record, or All Analog Album. I don't know that it's important or essential to make records this way but it is a totally different process and more visceral and less cerebral, so it's kept the otherwise tedious parts of making music much more enjoyable for me. I also happen to think it sounds warmer and better than digital recording and mixing, but it's subjective and I'm not on a high-horse about it. It was a smile. I know that recording in my warehouse added color and texture and ambient noise that might otherwise not be there and I'm really happy with this record having a "sound" of its own. Thank you all for helping to make it possible. I look forward to you all hearing it soon.

I'm still waiting for a handful of backers to turn in their surveys so I can order the t-shirts and totes and other items. If you haven't gotten around to it, here's a reminder.  For anyone still interested in participating in the rewards and/or pre-ordering the new record, feel free to contact me directly since the Kickstarter campaign has ended. I've had a handful of people write inquiring if they could get in on the same reward packages even though they didn't hear about the campaign until it ended and that's fine with me.

Also, I've decided to title the record, Ghosts.

I will post photos of the t-shirts and tote bags once they're done and send another update when something new happens that brings us closer to getting this record and assorted paraphernalia shipped out to you. Thanks again for backing this project!

-Simon

Update #7: Tote Bag & T-Shirt Designs to Choose From!

Posted on February 24

Joey Lynch just sent me the tote bag art. So, we now have both t-shirt and tote designs and I can begin sending out requests for your information. If you chose a reward package that included a choice of tote or t-shirt, these are the designs (man & woman=t-shirt, record & name=tote). Thanks for your patience. Expect to receive backer survey shortly!
