Trace
After all...
On February 12th, exactly a month after 16 soil samples were stored with 8×10 B/W sheet films, in a light-tight enclosure individually, I developed the film to find Traces of the Fukushima disaster. Below are some of the samples that I made, contact prints created from the negative films.

Trace #3 Former Kasumigaura Naval Air Force (Ami, Ibaraki)

Trace #4 Shioyasaki Lighthouse (Iwaki, Fukushima)

Trace #7 Nihonmatsu Castle (Nihonmatsu, Fukushima)

Trace #9 Asaka Kuni-tsuko Shrine (Koriyama, Fukushima)

Trace #16 Lake Hayama / Mano Dam (Iitate, Fukushima)

I really have mixed feelings about these results, as they are direct and physical records of the fallout. In fact, a year after the nuclear disaster occurred, the Fukushima nuclear facility is still leaking radiation into the environment. Sadly, the government does not undertake the responsibility for protecting the people from this radiation exposure.
I am dedicated to working on this project into the future. Partly because I'm fascinated by this image making process, and also because I feel responsible (or obsessed) to do something about the nuclear issue.
Also, I'd like to share the good news that five prints from Trace will be exhibited in a show called "The fire that doesn't go out" at Oberlin College (Oberlin, OH) starting March 1st. http://unendingfire.com/ More exhibitions news will be updated when they are confirmed.
Lastly... I'll start to work on books/prints shortly-- I'll be glad to send those out to you the Trace donors.
Thanks again for your support!
