About this project
I am an interdisciplinary artist from the San Francisco Bay Area and I have been invited to the Julia and David White artist colony in Costa Rica for a month long artist residency. I have created a kickstarter project to help offset the cost of this venture. Kickstarter is a really cool website that helps people with projects get started. It’s a way that people can contribute to a project and get something back in return. Each funding level has different rewards. You can contribute as little as $5 and with my project for just $25 you receive original artwork made in Costa Rica.
About My Artwork
My approach to photography is very antiquated. While the world is speeding forward with technology and convenience I prefer to slow down and use alternative and nontraditional processes. I enjoy the spontaneous and unexpected outcome of relying on Mother Nature, time and chemicals to reveal each piece. I seek to push the boundaries of photography, blurring the lines between fine art and traditional photography I attempt to free the photographic medium from the burden of its traditional representation.
I have a fascination with process, layering and texture; I feel these techniques breath life into my art. I use photography as a foundation for most of my artwork and I build, manipulate, layer or merge my photographs. I primarily using alternative photographic process and a variety of non-silver printing techniques such as Polaroid transfer, Lumen printing, liquid emulsion, and gum bichromate. Often I incorporate found and natural materials into my work, giving each piece warmth and character. All of these processes allow me to use my hands and be more intimate with the creation of each piece
About My Project
This is an amazing opportunity for me to create in the lush landscape and cultural traditions of Costa Rica. It will give me the gift of time to create in peace and tranquility amongst other artist and creative people. Costa Rica is an ideal place for inspiring my artwork. I plan to use the natural environment (sun and humidity) to create a new series of alternative process photographs inspired by my surroundings. I will document my residency and post updates on my blog for you to follow.
Your Contributions
The majority of funds will be used for airfare, lodging (the artist colony provides lodging at a subsidized rate), food, art supplies, shipping and other project expenses.
The remainder of the funds will be used to create Thank You Gifts for my generous supporters. As a backer of this project you will not only be supporting an up and coming artist but you will receive art in return. Please note that in most cases each reward will be chosen by me, although I am willing to discuss possible requests. Funds exceeding my goal will go towards any unforeseen project costs, and the creation of new artwork.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my project. Remember that I only have 30 days to reach my funding goal, and I can't do it alone. So please help me spread the word about my project! Please invite and encourage your friends and family to help support this project .Not only will you be helping an artist follow one of her dreams but you will also receive unique artwork.
Update:
I have had some questions about Kickstarter and my project that I would like to answer.
1. Your contribution is to assist in supporting my "project" which is an artist residency. The reason I am doing this is because it is expensive to come up with airfare, food, and supplies costs all at once. I am not asking for a handout or donation. Think of it as a pre sale. You contribute an amount to my project and you will receive artwork from me in return.
2. Kickstarter is all or nothing funding with a deadline. If I do not reach my goal by Nov 15th I will not receive any funds. All of the pledges will be returned to the person who contributed them. I will not receive anything.
3. Kickstarter uses Amazon.com Payments. It is a very safe and reputable company. Please be assured that your information is private and secured.
4. If you are not comfortable using kickstarter or Amazon payments and you still would like to contribute, please contact me directly shannon@shannonamidon.com. We can work out another way for you to support the project.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions and/or concerns.
Thanks for all of your support!

Shannon Amidon was born and raised in the California Bay Area. Her artwork is described as photo-based mixed media and alternative process photography.
Her subjects often involve objects the artist has found in nature or collected in her travels such as: feathers, seed pods, butterflies, and flowers. Using Xerox transfers, hand distressing, painting and other non silver techniques, Amidon creates unique pieces that reflect the mysterious and natural world around her. It is her intention to blur the lines between fine art and traditional photography by altering, layering and distressing her photographs. Through these techniques, Amidon breaks through the boundaries of traditional media and conventional fine art by creating an experience that goes beyond the paintbrush and camera.
Shannon's artwork has been exhibited nationwide with emphasis on the West Coast. She is a member of many arts organizations in the Bay Area and is active in the arts community. She is also involved in education outreach for children and young artist mentoring.
