Meet the filmmakers ...
Kris Wheeler has worn a lot of hats on his way to becoming a filmmaker. It all started with a cowboy hat. Raised on a cattle farm in the foothills of the Appalachians, Kris gave up a promising career as an athlete after a knee injury. He then shifted his focus to storytelling. His early career he spent in the daily newspaper ranks as a reporter and feature writer. Next came a stint as a magazine publisher for an Australian publishing firm. The next step was founding and publishing the magazines Agri-Alternatives, Atlanta House & Home, Cattle South and Coastal Homes & Lifestyles.
In 2005, Kris embarked on a second career as a documentary filmmaker, and by 2008 committed to working full time as a director/producer.
When not behind a camera or in the editing suite, Kris can be found pedaling his mountain bike along the aptly named “Kevorkian” somewhere in the north Georgia mountains.
Like many filmmakers of his generation, Wayne Franklin knew what he wanted to do with his life from the moment he saw Star Wars at age seven. Rather than moving to one of the “industry towns,” Wayne chose to stay in his native Alabama, working primarily as a commercial director and editor. He has created spots and long-form projects for a number of national clients. In hopes of spurring indie film in his adopted home of Birmingham, Wayne co-founded the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in 1999.
Wayne joined forces with Kris in 2005. Their partnership has grown to become Self-Proclaimed Entertainment. SPE released their first feature film, Back From the Dread, last fall. In addition to Duke & The King, they have another documentary feature and several unscripted series in development. Kris and Wayne are also the guiding forces behind Southern culture blogizine real-southern.com.
