To be created from 10,000 photos shot in Berlin, "Brittle Beauty" will yield paper montage works in my distinctive layering technique.
I recently traveled to Berlin and got a whirlwind perspective on political and emotional histories via explorations and sensitive observation of the built environment. I took almost 10,000 photographs in 10 days of psycho-geographic adventuring-- as content research for new collages and a book.
The ability to complete my process for Berlin-based work (book/collages) with this extensive material involves time, materials, copy charge, panels, strainers, acrylic medium, & studio space. I self-sustain my studio as an artist working numerous part-time and freelance positions, however, I cannot afford to commit the time required for spröde Schönheit without financial assistance.
Raising $6,000 will contribute to the time and expenses of the book edit and self-publishing of the book project (80 pages, 7"x7"); as well as contributing to sustaining my studio (rent/electric) for my handmade collage process, materials and copy imagery expenses, and allowing me time in the studio for composition and wet assembly of several large scale works (48"x96" range).
The content of the imagery references the "Brittle Beauty" landscape photographed for spröde Schönheit, Berlin project (2012 Takt Residency).
As photos mark time in a continuum of change, my destructive combination of images quests for authentically fresh visual tropes while documenting urban life amidst cyclical, capitalist Creative Destruction. The layered photographic moments ‘destroyed’ transmute the precious debris of history into visually dynamic, intellectually associative understandings of human “nature” (understandings, passions, and morals) —visually re-experienced and critically deconstructed.

Although my prior inventory is extensive, I wish to focus on moving forward in this Berlin-based work that feel so compelling. I limited the existing collage work available as rewards to emphasize the value such a high contribution would make to the project, while also working with my established market value for the 2'x2' size pieces. These Europe inventory works (2010-2011) are shown above. Original 12" range "life/fear" series works will be shown to backers directly.
