Scopey the Dog helps children observe the world around them in an entirely new way, while having fun and learning important concepts.
Our creative family has always had a passion for education and technology. Inventing something that combines technology and entertainment that will help tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and inventors to see the world around them in a completely different way is a natural result of this passion.
We know that the basis of science is exploration, observation and discovery. It is these three basics that has led man to his greatest discoveries. The character Scopey the Dog was born to help children explore, observe and discover new things, solve problems and uncover mysteries while learning scientific concepts and increasing environmental awareness in a really entertaining way.
Scopey the Dog is an educational, environmental children's icon. Scopey the Dog and his cast of supporting characters can take many forms, but our background in video camera microscopes led to incorporating a magnifying camera directly INTO a Scopey the Dog toy. The printed material can also take many forms, a short book allows us to incorporate fun activities on every page and employ the use of “micro-print” and “micro-images” for children to discover using the Scopey the Dog magnifying toy. The first book “Scopey the Dog and the Tadpoles” has been edited and improved and now needs to be printed. We have written more stories which need to be illustrated and printed to have as additional prototypes as well.
It’s important to note that the Scopey the Dog magnifying toy can be used to magnify ANY object or sample, not just the micro-images and text from the books.
The books encourage using the toy for many activities, including exploring objects in the environment and discovering “micro-worlds” in the home.
HOW SCOPEY THE DOG GOT STARTED AND CURRENT STATUS
In early 2009, we collaborated with a manufacturer in Taiwan who was able to modify their existing camera microscope to fit inside the Scopey the Dog plush toy which was also manufactured in Taiwan. By the end of 2009, we had already produced and tested prototypes of the plush toy Scopey the Dog with a battery powered 50x camera microscope built into Scopey’s nose. During that time we also wrote the first book titled “Scopey the Dog and the Tadpoles”. We partnered with a local artist to illustrate the book, and had it printed locally using a special printing process needed to produce the micro-images and micro-text. We obtained trademarks and have applied for a patent on the method of printing and magnifying. Further testing and evaluation by consumers and educators in 2010 helped us identify changes and improvement that needed to be made.
At that point we ran out of funds, and have no means of completing what we hope will be a valuable contribution to learning.
The prototype manufacturer we partnered with in Taiwan is able to add an LCD screen to the current Scopey the Dog plush toy prototypes and to make other minor changes necessary for durability and safety compliance. Working with our artist and illustrator partner, we will complete the “Scopey the Dog and the Tadpoles” book improvements and then have the revised edition printed. We will again use a local specialized printing company for production of the revised edition of the book.
OUR BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
The Scopey the Dog development team starts with Bill Hoffman, our father and fearless leader who began as a classroom teacher (science and math) and became headmaster of a private school. After leaving the classroom and administration, Bill began a career providing educational technology to schools, including heading up Western US Education sales efforts for Apple, before starting his own education sales company.
Next are Mark Hoffman, TT Robson, and Elise Alden, siblings and children of Bill Hoffman. They all joined the family business at various points and focused on catering to teachers to fulfill technology and science needs by focusing on hand-held video camera microscopes. The family company not only provided the technology needed to improve teaching, but also provided training and wrote curriculum and lesson plans to effectively use the camera microscopes with students.
As a group, we have over 50 years experience in working with technology as an education tool with a background and love for science, education, and the environment, not to mention the desire to enlighten and entertain young learners and having our own kids that we want to provide quality products for.
BRING SCOPEY THE DOG TO LIFE
We’ve already put a lot of time, effort and our own funds into this project so far, but now we’ve run out of resources and need a final push to get it off the ground and into children’s lives.
Since our family business is too small to bring this potentially huge new product to market, we’re asking for help in financing the next generation of prototypes to promote to toy and book distributors and retailers.
NEED AND HOW IT WILL HELP
With your help, we hope to raise $25,000 which will get Scopey back on the path to becoming a real product in order to get him into the hands of children, teachers, and parents.
If funded, we will be able to accomplish the next four important aspects of this project.
1. The funding will go towards development and production of second generation prototypes including making final edits and preparation to print a limited run of the updated book “Scopey the Dog and the Tadpoles” with an improved story line and corrected printing quality.
2. It will allow us to produce at least 100 regular plush toy Scopey the Dogs without a camera or screen for market testing and for promotion to book and toy companies.
3. It will also allow us to design and engineer a new version of the electronic Scopey the Dog plush toy with the camera microscope and an added integrated LCD screen inside Scopey’s backpack.
The LCD screen is an important aspect of the final project in order to eliminate the cables and the need for a TV or computer and to make Scopey truly portable for use anywhere to explore the world around.
4. Finally, it will allow us to get laboratory safety and product compliance tests done so that Scopey is not only fun and entertaining, but is also safe.

This helps tremendously with our project goal AND to the development and production of a Scopey the Dog camera microscope toy specifically designed to appeal to slightly older children. This would include a plastic version of Scopey the Dog from which the camera is removable for use by itself or with other plastic character models. It will also include more educational materials specifically for the older age group in the form of a game and/or various activities that are fun, but encourage further higher level exploration, observation and discovery with the camera. You receive our $100 award and a prototype of the newest Scopey the Dog edu-tainment materials made to accompany it.Estimated delivery:
