Vinyl 7" Single featuring Brian Harnetty's work with the Sun Ra/El Saturn archives, taken from his 2010 sound installation.

In 2010, composer Brian Harnetty was commissioned by Experimental Sound Studios in Chicago to create a sound installation using material from the Sun Ra/El Saturn archives.

"It is a huge, rambling collection of recordings that are only loosely held together by the presence of Sun Ra," explains Harnetty. "There are rehearsals, live shows, lectures, answering machine tapes, self-help tapes, recordings off of the TV, etc. I spent a lot of time listening and narrowing down the selections that I thought might be appropriate. I then asked several musicians to play along with the recordings, which I then crafted into the individual parts of the piece."

The installation, titled The Star Faced One, was a 60 minute loop that ran nonstop at the Audible Gallery at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago from November 12 to December 19, 2010. Harnetty will be releasing an edited version of the installation on CD later this year on Atavistic Records. Scioto Records is proud to release three non-album tracks on 7" vinyl and digital download. Titled "The Sociophonic Key," the three collages are from a variety of sources and include Arkestra rehearsal material.

Scioto Records will press 500 limited edition and numbered copies on black vinyl. Cut by John Hull at MusiCol in Columbus, Ohio (using his 1940s Skully lathe), the records will be pressed by Gotta Groove Records in Cleveland. Artwork by Jay Pluck will be printed at Igloo Letterpress in Worthington, Ohio.
