And now, an update!
As with years past, I will be bringing some Profoto Pro-7b kits, which are now on hold for our departure in 4 weeks. The goal this year, however, is to start investing in some of the battery gear so that this rental budget can come down each year. While buying these kits isn't yet feasible (a used kit would cost about $3500 each), the workaround for this year is that I am building my own battery pack/inverter kits for my studio lights. These will be tested on the playa at the Human Light Suit Photo Booth -- sort of the "part 2" of the project this year. The photo booth is a part of camp Baal-Mart (located at 7:45 and Esplenade). I also plan on testing them on some shoots here in LA before we head out, it would be nice to see how many shots I can get out of each battery before I get to the desert.

The batteries are Lithium Ion Polymer (LiFePO4), a newer battery technology that has a better lifespan and is much lighter weight than Lead-Acid. They are quite a bit pricier, but the long-term payoff is huge.
I purchased a few different inverters to try out. The inverter takes the DC power from the battery and converts it to AC (like the power in your house). The lights demand a "pure sine wave" inverter, and one that can handle a really heavy electrical load during the recharge time (about 4-5 seconds). The one that ended up working with the heavy electrical load of the lights (Profoto Acute 2400 kit at full power / fast recycle) was actually an original Paul C. Buff Vagabond inverter. It's definitely straining with the strobes set to "fast" mode, and I would like to find something newer, but for the time being, this option is working.

Here is a photo of the frankenstein-like contraption: L-R the inverter, battery, power source for the lights, and of course one of the lights. I'll need to find a case that these fit in to.
So the goal is to take these on location this week/end and see what we can make happen!
The biggest, and possibly most useful addition to the gear lineup would be a newer camera body with a higher strobe sync speed. I've been using my own, older system, which syncs at 1/125. A newer PhaseOne DF body would make it possible to get by with only one power pack (less power necessary) or the smaller Acute600 battery packs, and would also allow me to shoot lower depth of field and to be able to capture motion without blur. Given availability and fairly high rental costs, this doesn't look like an option this year... But it's great to have goals for next year!
