Final Etching Plates

Update #67 · Mar 7, 2012 · 6 comments

Hey, everyone!

First, a note: I've had folks asking about updating shipping info, and YES! I will be sure to get updated shipping info, but rather than mass collected again, I'm going to contact folks directly as their packages are ready to ship to confirm addresses. I am keeping that in mind as I know plenty of folks have moved during the long delays. On with the update!

Sorry for the delay on this, but I was watching my niece for a few days, then got caught up in a local TEDx event, so my apologies for the lack of communication last week. Here's where we're at! The final etching plates in Illustrator, SVG & PDF formats can be found here:

I spot welded the test picks and even picked a few locks with them. However, the test metal needs a heat treatment for the picks to work well, this is something I'm hoping to avoid in the production run. Oh! And I have some photos of them assembled, but they aren't on the computer I'm doing this update from, so I'll send those along with the next ones.

OK! So, the biggest change to the new etching plate is - one of the picks was missing from the test batch! Somewhere in the dozen iterations of these picks the advanced, undercut "gonzo" style pick was replaced with the beginner gonzo. Basically, 1 pick was appearing twice. I'm not sure where the error originated, but it's been corrected in this version. The other one is that I've backed the double ball onto the Large S, which helps compact the entire design a bit. You can see that this is producing 2 full sets of picks and 1 partial set, plus a few tokens. They are the outline of the word bubble logo of Open Locksport that I'll be tumbling and distributing with the picks for folks to toss on their keychains.

These are also separated out into a handle sheet & a pick sheet. The astute will notice that the handle sheet doesn't actually have enough to match the pick sheet, this is just a matter of space, so I'll have to produce more of the handle sheets than the pick sheets. I found that there was some material going unused, so I tossed some tension wrench blanks in there as well. Nothing too crazy going on, but there are the details.

The next big bit is selecting metal and I've got a meeting to do just that. I'll then send the top option to the etcher to see if it's viable for etching. The goal is to find a spring steel that can be etched without needing a secondary heat treating process. I have options in mind already, but I'm going to talk to an expert before pulling the trigger. When I know what the metal will be I'll let all of you know exactly what it is and where you can find it.

Oh, I should also be picking up the tumbler soon, so I'll update when that gets in as well!

Also, as soon as my talk from the TEDx event is available I'll send that your way as well! In the meanwhile I've attached a rehearsal demo of a song the house band, The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library, wrote about me! They wrote songs for every speaker, which was pretty awesome. And a photo from the event as well.
