Thank You and A Story
So first, THANK YOU so much everyone for supporting my project and getting it successfully funded! It's so rewarding to hear everyone's positive and encouraging comments, and to see something I have created spread through different communities. I couldn't have done it without all of you posting and tweeting and emailing blogs to get the word out, so thank you for that. It's amazing the effect people on a mission can have in groups.
Second, I thought I would share a story with everyone about how these posters almost never saw the light of day. So gather 'round the campfire kids and listen up.
When I first started designing these posters two years ago, everything was going great. I was having a good time creating them since it was the first big side project I had worked on since graduating from Purdue. I had six of them done and the rest sketched out either in my head or on paper. I was really starting to see the potential of the work I was doing.
I had been designing all of these on my desktop that I bought a year and a half before; a work horse of a computer. But one habit I had with my desktop was putting it into hibernate mode every night before I went to bed. It's an option in Windows, and there's no warning or anything, so I did it every night. It sure beat waiting for it boot up from being completely off. I mean, those extra 20 seconds of my day were precious. But one day I turned it on and it was acting slow. Much slower than normal and it definitely was not improving. So I tried rebooting it, and a screen came up telling me there was no hard drive installed. Huh? It's sitting right there; where could it have gone?
So I went through the usual hour long phone calls with tech support in India, going over the same commands again and again. It wasn't working. I took it in to the Geek Squad and told them I at least needed my data off the drive. So they looked at it, but decided they couldn't do anything. Something was physically wrong with the drive. They could send it to their data recovery center a couple hundred miles away and possibly save it, but it could cost anywhere from $300 to $3,200. That's quite a range! So I obliged, because I had my posters on that drive - and that drive alone.
After a week, I got a phone call that told me the drive was physically damaged. A bearing or something had come loose. Because when the computer is in hibernate mode, the hard drive continues to spin in order to save the state you were in. So my hard drive had basically been spinning for a year and a half without much rest at all. The type of damage meant the drive was lost, but they could save my data - for $600. Now, I'm not stupid. I had all of my projects backed up on CDs and an external hard drive. Everything except my EPCOT posters, because they were so new. I could have redone them all, but I knew that they wouldn't be exactly the same and they wouldn't have that special something that the ones stuck on the drive had. So I paid $600 to get just those posters back. Everyone called me crazy and called it a huge waste of a lot of money. But boy was it worth it...
So the lesson of the story is hibernate mode sucks.
