An experimental documentary on the gramophone and cinematic love poem to scratchy old music.

About the film

"78rpm" is simultaneously a documentary on the spring-wound gramophone and a freeform filmic love letter to vintage music and connoisseurs of the old-time milieu.

More broadly, the film is a pondering of obsolesce from an environmental as well as philosophical perspective, and the value of tactile experience in an increasingly virtual civilization.

Personalities and authorities to be interviewed in the film include DJ MAC from the vintage phonograph show on WFMU, Michael W. Haar the Ragtime Barber of East Village Radio, the London-based vintage record spinners The Shellac Sisters, and DJ 78.  The film will also include a visit to the Steampunk World's Fair, and appearances by 78 record collectors, audio archivists, the underground comix artist Dame Darcy, as well as sundry dandies, flaneurs, burlesque performers, and others with a taste for things vintage.

Interviews shot in HD video will take place between sequences of vintage music from 78 records and images shot on 16mm analog film.  The 16mm sequences, transferred to HD at DiJiFi, are to be hand-developed and shot with lush black and white stock manufactured by ORWO, who are helping to sponsor the project.  Projected running time of the finished film will be 80 minutes.

Shooting will take place over the spring and summer of 2013, and post production in the fall, with a goal of completion at the beginning of 2014.
