Brett Carlson's stills from the making of Outliers.

Update #19 · Mar 12, 2012 · comment

Greetings Outliers backers,

Brett Carlson, one of the cinematographers that shot with us on the trip, has posted a brilliant set of stills illuminating the making of Outliers.  We think it's a stunning set that represents the spirit of our journey and process behind working with Tim Navis, Kim Holtermand, and Deru in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

This is a behind-the-scenes and doesn't even begin to reveal the main features that Tim and Kim focused on in the film.  Amazing.

Also, another reminder as we're deep in post-production on the film.  Don't forget to tell your friends about our Facebook page and blog.  We're still on track to ship some time mid-May, but keep an eye out on the Facebook page for more regular project updates than you'll find via the Kickstarter page.

A busy, busy winter...

Update #18 · Feb 1, 2012 · comment

Hello Outliers supporters,

It's been a while since the last update, and just wanted to remind everybody that we're posting updates about the project over at the Facebook page and the blog regularly.  Just in case you were wondering what's been going on...

Post-production has been an inspiration, as we see tracks roll in from the soundtrack artists and we work with the incredible visual material we came back with.  We expect to wrap up in April and ship rewards around mid to late May.  Also, we should have more details surrounding the live screening event in Chicago and possibly beyond, all in the coming weeks.  Oh, and a web store for your late-comer friends to get in on the action.

Outliers, Vol I: Iceland - We're back + editing is underway.

Update #17 · Nov 22, 2011 · comment

Hello Outliers backers,

It's been about 5 weeks since we've returned from the land of ice, and now that we've all finally caught our breaths - an update is long overdue.

First... there isn't a day where we're not thinking about how much we miss it, and want to go back.  Iceland, you are an incredible place.  We'll never forget the journey.  No matter how much planning went into setting up what we thought we'd see and do, the entire experience was one surprise after another.  Our mission to collectively document the unexpected in a foreign element was a huge success in that way, and the meaning of the "Outliers" concept took shape.

The end of our time together had culminated with the realization that our film will not represent the typical depiction of the majestic place that we've seen in calendar photos.  The route schedule was aggressive - we could have easily spent another month shooting.  October in Iceland is truly unpredictable. All preconceived ideas about what it's like to get from place-to-place had changed on the fly due to a combination of weather, daylight, and mixed information regarding how long it actually takes to travel from one town to another.  All of these factors contributed to the outcome of what we came home with and in retrospect, had a huge impact on the feel of the stories we're ready to tell.

After returning and taking a step back... we've begun the process of putting things in perspective and working on the first steps at an edit.  We documented our experience in a multitude of mediums - 35mm, 120, Polaroid, Super 8mm, DSLR video, field recordings, sketches, journal entries, physical objects, actual pieces of earth -  and though we're going to save some surprises for the release... we want to share our assembly process with you as raw as possible.  So remember to stay connected via the Facebook page and the project blog to see content posts as we hunker down for the winter and bury our heads in post-production and design.  Like us on Facebook, subscribe to the blog, send us messages, spread the word, and keep in touch!

The premiere event is still planned for a TBD weekend during June 2012 in Chicago, and we'll post details as those coalesce.  So just in case you're wondering when your goods will arrive, we're planning an early-May release.  Thanks for being patient and supporting the project so early on.  We'll make it worth the wait.

PS - There are rumblings about a European premiere event next summer as well, so hopefully we can bring the same performances and screenings to our friends and family overseas as we have planned for the U.S.

PSS - Here are some 35mm stills and polaroids we recently posted.

Thanks everybody!

One week until Iceland, new Facebook page

Update #16 · Sep 24, 2011 · 2 comments

Hello Backers,

Our voyage begins in only one week from today.  That's why we've given the project it's own Facebook page, and a blog is on the way.  If you "Like" the Facebook page, you'll see all the posts that come through the blog.  There will be intermittent web connectivity, but we really want to make sure that all of our amazing supporters are able to chart our course along with us.

We've reached our goal, thanks to you!

Update #15 · Sep 3, 2011 · 6 comments

Wow, everybody...

With a bit over 24 hours left, we are all floored at the amazing response we've had over the last few days.  It was the increased pledges and generosity that brought us into close range, and then this morning we had a very pleasant surprise when an online language learning company called Mango Languages put their faith behind our project with an Executive Producer sponsorship.

We're over our goal, but most of the rewards ARE limited so please do let friends know to act now if they're interested in owning any of the items on the page.

1 day left and the dream begins...
