Hello Outliers backers,
It's been about 5 weeks since we've returned from the land of ice, and now that we've all finally caught our breaths - an update is long overdue.
First... there isn't a day where we're not thinking about how much we miss it, and want to go back. Iceland, you are an incredible place. We'll never forget the journey. No matter how much planning went into setting up what we thought we'd see and do, the entire experience was one surprise after another. Our mission to collectively document the unexpected in a foreign element was a huge success in that way, and the meaning of the "Outliers" concept took shape.
The end of our time together had culminated with the realization that our film will not represent the typical depiction of the majestic place that we've seen in calendar photos. The route schedule was aggressive - we could have easily spent another month shooting. October in Iceland is truly unpredictable. All preconceived ideas about what it's like to get from place-to-place had changed on the fly due to a combination of weather, daylight, and mixed information regarding how long it actually takes to travel from one town to another. All of these factors contributed to the outcome of what we came home with and in retrospect, had a huge impact on the feel of the stories we're ready to tell.
After returning and taking a step back... we've begun the process of putting things in perspective and working on the first steps at an edit. We documented our experience in a multitude of mediums - 35mm, 120, Polaroid, Super 8mm, DSLR video, field recordings, sketches, journal entries, physical objects, actual pieces of earth - and though we're going to save some surprises for the release... we want to share our assembly process with you as raw as possible. So remember to stay connected via the Facebook page and the project blog to see content posts as we hunker down for the winter and bury our heads in post-production and design. Like us on Facebook, subscribe to the blog, send us messages, spread the word, and keep in touch!
The premiere event is still planned for a TBD weekend during June 2012 in Chicago, and we'll post details as those coalesce. So just in case you're wondering when your goods will arrive, we're planning an early-May release. Thanks for being patient and supporting the project so early on. We'll make it worth the wait.
PS - There are rumblings about a European premiere event next summer as well, so hopefully we can bring the same performances and screenings to our friends and family overseas as we have planned for the U.S.
PSS - Here are some 35mm stills and polaroids we recently posted.
Thanks everybody!
