The Circle of Regional Effigies (or CORE Project) is a collaborative exhibition that will surround the Burning Man in 2011. The first project of its kind in Black Rock City, the CORE project will be comprised of twenty-four effigies, each created by a local outpost of the Regional Network; these effigies will be placed in a circle just outside the main art installation – The Man. The CORE Project will culminate in a coordinated burn event on Thursday night – September 1, 2011, a fitting Rite of Passage to mark our culture's evolution far beyond the bounds of Black Rock City.
The effigy that Los Angeles elected to build is a Food Truck, or Roach Coach. The truck, which will be 12 feet wide, 20 feet long and 16 feet tall and is now named SCARAB, will be able to house music, fire effects, video, plays, puppet shows and will have a working kitchen. Nothing brings a community together better than food.
So why is the truck named SCARAB? In Egyptian mythology, SCARAB means ”Transformation”, which ties in nicely with this year’s Burning Man Theme “Rites of Passage”. According to ancient Egyptian myths, the sun (Ra) rolls across the sky each day and transforms bodies and souls. Kheper, the Scarab, pushes the sun across the sky into the underworld or night. The Scarab is seen as an earthly symbol of this heavenly cycle. Scarabs have also been considered a good luck charm.
The truck is being built in modules in Los Angeles, California and will be assembled on site at Burning Man. 100% of monies donated to the project will go towards the purchase of materials/supplies for the SCARAB truck, and transportation to Black Rock City.
