An animated short about a young boy and his best friend. And trying to find a place to fit in when you are, well, different.
Different: An Animated Tale is a short film that explores what happens between two children, Micah and Sam, when they start to outgrow their friendship - especially when one of them is imaginary.
I mean really, why can't you just have imaginary friends forever? And where do they go when you say goodbye?
HOW: Since the film deals heavily with the ideas of "real" and "imaginary" life, I wanted to use some animation techniques that would help to separate the two. So the scenes of the film take place in one of the two spaces (and sometimes both): "Real" life will be primarily hand-drawn, and in black-and-white/grayscale. Think minimalist line art. When Imaginary life intrudes, it does so in vibrant, photographic color. Literally! I'll be collage-animating the imaginary world, using my own photographic source material. For an idea of the style, think David Hollenbach with a dash of Eric Carle. (Note - this is a film that is geared towards adults, not children.) As visitors to the imaginary world, the children will continue to be animated by hand as line art, but will carry with them a splash of color. I will do this by drawing the characters on tracing vellum, and then compositing them over the collage backgrounds. I will be using actors as reference material for the main characters in the story, and photographs from Ithaca, NY and Cleveland, GA (among many other places) as the basis for the collage animations. My goal is to do everything by hand, and use computers only for the basic compositing and editing. It'll take some time, but it'll be worth it! Also, I will be composing original music for the film, which will be recorded and released as the soundtrack (approximately 12 minutes of music in total).
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO? The money raised for this project will go towards the following:
HIRING ACTORS: for reference, as well as voice acting. PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING SUPPLIES: paper, inks, and such. PAPER: specifically, tracing vellum. INK: the non-photo-printing kind. For actual drawing. COMPUTER HARDWARE: My humble machine needs a RAM upgrade, and I need some serious hard drive space in order to do this! LOCATION SHOOTING: photographic shoots in Ithaca, NY and Cleveland, GA. MUSIC RECORDING: studio rental for the soundtrack. FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS: too many to count!
