My name is Sarah Thomas and I am a huge nerd. By day I am a designer and by night I am a gamer. Modern Hanafuda will hopefully be the first of many fun projects to come. Thanks for all your support!
Can't wait to get my cards! I have a deck of Hawaiian style Hanafuda cards, but wanting this one as well, because will be easier to use in certain situations. :)
Yeah, getting a bit anxious for an update myself. Dying to get ahold of these cards :)
Can we get another update? We haven't had one since April 1.
Update inbound!
@David Elliot Haha... That's exactly what I was just thinking!
Update?
Sarah, they are beautiful! Thank you!
Over 200% Wow. :)
Glad I got in on this at the last minute. I was wavering, but my daughter and I decided we'd like to learn something new together. Thanks for the inspiration for some mother/daughter bonding time. Congrats on a successful project!
(psssst: "Hanafuda" literally-literally means "Flower... (hana/花) ...Cards" (fuda/札). Just a linguisti-twitch!
Ordered two: This is an AWESOME idea, I can't believe I didn't see it earlier. The small size of hanafuda have always made them hard to get into. Plus, I can them use them to play Oicho-Kabu, the original game (kinda like Baccarat) where the Japanese mafia "Yakuza" derive their name!

Hmm, not too much further till 200%. Wouldn't that be sweet? :)
Instructions would be sweet... :)
The cards look beautiful by the way.
Put you over $10,000! I wonder if this is what it feels like for internet trolls who post "First!"
Anyways, congrats, chica. I look forward to seeing the final product.
Hi.
Do you have a way to just add a couple more packs of the cards to the reward (for a suitable increase in the pledge)?
I must say I'm looking forward to this. My GF and I play Hanafuda together quite often on some cardboard tiles that are rather hard to shuffle. Thanks for you initiative in getting this started.
Thanks everyone for the support! I wanted to let you guys know, just in case you missed the backer update, that I am looking into getting instructions. Stay tuned for more information!
200th!
Yay you made it! I wanted to third the including of instructions. I've never played with Hanafuda cards before and am very exited to learn!
Congratulations on a successful venture with still 14 days to go!
Congratulations! :) Very much looking forward to the project!
I'm really excited about your project, Sarah, and it looks like you're making great progress. I agree with Jakob about instructions, though. Could a guide that fits into the tuck boxes be part of a stretch goal if you exceed your funding target? Or, would that delay delivery too much?
Hi Jakob! I will see what I can do about providing a guide. In a perfect world, these guides would fit in the tuck boxes. Speaking of which, all cards will be printed on 305 gsm playing card stock finished with an aqueous base and UV overcoat. The final package also comes with a custom designed tuck box to keep everything sorted and pristine when not in use. Hopefully that helps!
One thing I'm thinking should be included is instructions, and Yaku sets featuring these modern designs. Because these look wildly different than your classic set. Or maybe just a comparison between your design and the classic one, because it'll take some getting used to these cards. So, just something to fill the gap, you know?
Love what you're doing. Hope the project gets full funding! Also, what will these cards be printed on?
