Sketch from Julie Dillon

Update #11 · Jan 10, 2013 · 1 comment

I just got a sketch from Julie Dillon and I wanted to share it with all of you.

I'm stoked! I can't wait to see the final piece with all the detail and color.

Also, some of you wanted an easy way to download all of the artwork in the higher resolution files. I created a GitHub repository for this. Not everything is there quite yet, but I'll add to it over time. GitHub is a version control site and it allows you to download the entire repository as a zip file. I believe you can also sign up to get alerts or to monitor the RSS feed. Let me know if you have any questions or if there are other things I can do to help.

New Year, New Art!

Update #10 · Jan 3, 2013 · comment

The past few months have been crazy busy (well, busy considering that I still have a full time job and my own freelancing to do). I know some of the reward artists are a bit behind on their work; I'm trying to get all of that squared away for you folks.

That said, I want to share some of the great artwork that we've received over the past few months. Let's start with one of the big ones, an elemental wizard created by Robert Scott.

We also have this pirate by Anna Kreider.

These two pieces from Sarah Carney

More art from Kaitlynn Peavler

Art from Sandy Jacobs-Tolle

Backer requested art from Brian Patterson

And more sketches, from Karen Luk, Christina Silliman, Tanna Tucker, and Lorena Soriano.

We also purchased some art created for an upcoming roleplaying game, the Art of Power by Galileo Games. The artist is Jenna Fowler.

There's been a ton of art, I may have missed a piece or two. More is on the way.

Since G+ and Twitter is much easier to update, I add new art there far more frequently. I also created a G+ community for Prismatic Art. In addition to general discussion and pieces of art for the collection, there is a space where anyone can donate art or list links for other sources of art.

Forward Progress!

Update #9 · Sep 28, 2012 · comment

Assignments

We've made some commission assignments! We hope to have most of these by the end of the year although a few might take slightly longer.

  • The big color, 12" x 9" piece: Julie Dillon
  • The 4 black & white 12" x 9" pieces, each with a hero adventuring: Winona Nelson, Jennifer Rodgers, Claire Hummel, and Robert Scott.
  • We've also assigned some of the black & white 5" x 8" pieces. We'll be adding more, but so far we have Crystal Frasier, Grace D Palmer, Sarah Carney, James Stowe, Karen Luk, Jody Lindke, Christina Silliman, Shari Chankhamma, Lorena Sorena Garcia, Tanna Tucker, Sue Rankin, Emily Vitori, Lydia Black, Sandy Jacobs-Tolle, Joy Park, and Kaitlynn Peavler.

More Backer Art

We’ve also received some more of the backer art from Crystal Frasier, Brian Patterson, and Kaitlynn Peavler.

Donations

John W Sheldon was kind enough to donate some of his art to the collection.

Reworked the early preview reward

Backer Tim Rodriguez accepted an offer of an alternative reward so we can get the art out to everyone even sooner. For those who don’t know Tim, he does Brooklyn Indie Games and the Dice + Food + Lodging podcast. His first published game is Ghost Pirates and he’s currently working on a new game called Hyperreality -- the Reality TV Gameshow RPG. Thanks to Tim, I can now add the artwork we are commissioning for the project as soon as I get it, rather than waiting 3 months.

Prismatic Art on the Web

I’ve uploaded most of what I have so far to a number of locations:

Things to Do

There’s still some backer art that is working its way through the artists. I had forgotten how busy summer can be for myself, backers, and the artists. I also have to create the thank you pages on the website and get information from the backers who want to include a logo and/or have their own thank you page on the site. Then there are artist pages to do as well. Finally, I’ll have another batch of artwork to commission as soon as I get a handle on the current batch.

More frequent updates happen on Twitter (@PrismaticArt) and Google+ since I know at least some patrons prefer to not receive tons of email. Thanks everyone for all of your support!

Website start, some backer art, and more updates

Update #8 · Sep 15, 2012 · comment

Hi, everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates. This summer was devastating for me in a number of ways, including losing a good friend to suicide. I've been working on things in the background though and want to share some of them with you.

Website Start

I have the start of the website here: http://www.prismaticart.com/. I'm using the same hosting as SarahDarkmagic.com so it doesn't cost me anything additional. That's why there isn't a hosting fee listed in the budget. I've uploaded all of the backer art and art from Farewell to Fear there. All of this art is available for use under the Creative Commons Attributiion and Share-Alike license. The website has suggested attributions complete with artist name.

Backer Art

Some of the backer art has been finished, including pieces from Kaitlynn Peavler, Daniel Solis, and Crystal Frasier. I'm attaching the art to this post.

Commissioning

I've also been in contact with artists to commission the art that's just for this project. So far we have Julie Dillon for the large color image that will feature multiple heroes. As I get the rest of the groups settled out, I'll announce the lineups and share the concepts they have for the pieces. This project will take a lot of organizational work so I hope you all will bear with me. Thanks again!

Where to Find Things

All art for the collection will be added to the Prismatic Art Collection website, the Prismatic Art G+ page, and Pinterest. I'll work on adding it to other places as well. If there's somewhere you'd like to see it featured, let me know. I would also love advice about adding it to sites such as RPGNow.

Budget and Commission Plan

Update #7 · Jun 3, 2012 · 4 comments

The backer list is now finalized and I'm going through each group to get the info I need from them for their rewards. If I haven't gotten to your group yet, don't worry, I will soon.

The added benefit of the finalized backer list is that I know how much money I have to use for the project.

Budget

So, out of the $6,416, we have the following allocations:

  • About $600 to Kickstarter and Amazon Payments
  • Between $750 and $800 in backer rewards.
  • $500 to Farewell to Fear. In exchange, all the art produced by that project will be available through Prismatic Art Collection.
  • About $4,516 free for art we want to commission from the artists.
Art Plan
Daniel was nice enough to come up with an art plan for the project. We both agree we're going to get the most for our money by concentrating more on black & white art.
  • 1 Color - 12" x 9" - $300 - An epic scene showing a diverse cadre of fantasy heroes (a rogue, fighter, mage and cleric) all being heroic together. This is effectively the "cover" of the Prismatic Art Collection.
  • 4 BW - 12" x 9" - $800 - More epic scenes, but each focuses on one hero in their natural adventuring environment. One piece for the fighter, rogue, mage and cleric each.
  • 30 BW Line Art - ~5" x ~8" - $2,500 - A series of full-body character designs showing fantasy heroes in action poses, isolated on a white background. These are going to be the workhorses of the collection, so no soft or gradient backgrounds. Keep shading limited.
  • 8 BW Line Art - 3" x 3" - $400 - Head portraits of male/female characters in each class. These will be handy as in-game avatar icons or example character portraits.

Depending on what happens, we may need to deviate from the plan at times. Barring diversions, this plan would give us 43 pieces of art in addition to everything we get from Farewell to Fear and the 25 character portraits commissioned as backer rewards. That's a pretty awesome start!

This plan will let us commission artwork from about 40 different artists. My plan is to get commissions to the artists we've already evaluated in the next week or two and then start going through the rest of the list and do additional assignments after that. My hope is to do it in batches so Daniel and I don't overwhelm ourselves, especially since we're not taking any money for our time or energy. It will also be easier to handle the feedback from all of you that way. I hope that helps and thanks again for supporting this project.
