About this project

(A spread from our third issue, "Borders and Beans")

Oprah says we’re happy. We think that statement bears examining. Last November author Dan Buettner announced that San Luis Obispo—along with Denmark and Singapore—was one of the happiest places on the planet. While the Chamber of Commerce leapt with giddy pride, and Oprah raced a film crew down to our sleepy metropolis to discover the source of our alleged happiness, we were left wondering: Isn’t that a little simplistic? How do you even begin to measure happiness? What about our sizeable homeless population? Are they happy? And why does everyone feel compelled to jump on the public relations bandwagon?

And what does happiness mean, really, anyway? The Beatles memorably claimed that “Happiness is a warm gun.” For some of our ancestors, it was the nearest whorehouse. For a few, those irascible Dunites who filled Oceano with artists and thinkers, it was living off the grid, free from social constraints. For us? Happiness is collaborating with San Luis Obispo’s sizeable population of artists, writers, and thinkers.

The Happy Issue will be our fourth, since we began publishing San Louie in August 2010. We’re happy to work for free, and so are our dedicated and magnificent team of contributors. But we still need to cover our printing costs. In fact, our fundraising goal of $3,500 just matches the print cost for 1,000 copies of the magazine. Additional funding will allow us to begin the happy task of repaying the many artists and writers who have dedicated their time and money to this endeavor. So, if you’d like to help San Louie take on Oprah (OK, not really, but you have to appreciate the show of bravado, right?), if you are a fan of provocateurs, a supporter of lost causes (which some say print as a media is—but we refuse to succumb to such cynicism), a believer in creative minds that spin visions that we can’t always afford to realize, please jump on the San Louie bandwagon.

San Louie

Has not connected their Facebook account.

The Central Coast magazine that sounds like your robust old uncle but reads like Shakespeare.
The core “we” is a team of four women who reside in San Luis Obispo: Editor Ashley Schwellenbach (also the Managing Editor for a local alternative newsweekly), Art Directors Catherine Trujillo (a special collections curator at Cal Poly) and Mignon Khargie (artist and co-founder of Salon.com), and photographer Jen Manuele (proprietor of Sally Loo’s, a café in the city’s Railroad District). With the help of our ragtag, misfit artists and writers, we are committed to exploring the vast cultural and artistic potential of our small town, telling the stories, large and small, of the Central Coast. Our first Superhero-themed issue was printed in August 2010. Animalia followed three months later, then Borders and Beans in February. The Happy Issue will be our fourth.
