Earth is uninhabited by man. Most died, few left for Titan, a moon of Saturn. With them they took the remnants of humanity, what was left of it anyway. But there was an accident, the ships were damaged, and the remnants lost. They arrived on Titan without their history and soon began to lose their memory.
Sankofa is a film about the woman they asked to find it.
Sankofa is a film about memory.
Sankofa is both a science fiction film and a documentary.
Sankofa is a film that is shot a variety of formats, utilizing in-camera and experimental techniques.
The film explores ideas about how the past gives our present moment meaning. What it is it like to live life looking through a lens? Or in front of one? What do we gain from documenting ourselves?
The story follows a woman on a mission to recover the history of the human race. Along the way she makes discoveries, including a crate of objects from earth, one of which is a documentary about the nature of memory and remembering. As she inspects these relics she begins to question her mission.
The documentary follows different individuals and their interaction with memory and the moment - the abstract and concrete. Looking through the eyes of a photographer, child, architect, filmmaker and others - the film asks, "How does our past, and how we record it, affect our present and future?".
Just a few of the individuals we will be following...
Justin Guthrie - Photographer
Sigurd Larson - Architect
Tofu Fisher Sugiyama - Son of Seth Fisher, Comic Book Artist
We have decided not to limit ourselves to a single format and rather to use whatever technology best suits the story we are trying to tell. The film will be shot in many locations using a variety of visual techniques and styles. Use of hd video, timelapse footage, super 8mm film, and mini-dv will provide us with an allegory that will allow us to better represent memory cinematically.
For the science fiction portion of the film our team will be building physical models of our ship, elaborate sets and props. Using in-camera effects and innovative experimental techniques will give our film a unique, imaginative and original look.
A large majority of the documentary portion has already been filmed in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia, and is currently being edited. Interviews and shoots are being scheduled and coordinated across the globe in Japan, Germany, France, New Zealand, and the US.
A large portion of what we are asking for will go toward renting a space and constructing a set. We also need to feed our crew, rent equipment, cover travel expenses and more. The $15,000 we are raising on Kickstarter is what we need to make this film come to life; the more we raise, the further we can take our film.
So far we have funded the film ourselves and will continue to contribute. This crowdfunding campaign will enable the rest of the production to happen in the following months. The narrative portion of the film has been planned for February 2013. Our script is finished and pre-production has been started. Post production will take place in Berlin, Germany during the spring of 2013 allowing us to make deadlines for film festival submissions in the summer of 2013.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Perhaps the biggest challenge, and biggest risk in filmmaking are the number of variables involved in making it happen. Making a movie requires the passion, vision and time of dozens of individuals, good weather, working equipment, cooperative land owners, enough money for supplies and lunch, safe working conditions, and so many other things. Any one of these could make or break Sankofa. Further, any of these details could also radically shift the direction of the project. Investing in this film means that you understand that sometimes things go wrong, and that what is produced may look and feel different than what we propose.
To be more specific, we are shooting with an international crew. Timing is everything! We need to get everyone to Berlin, on the same page, and working together like a team in a short amount of time. While all of us have worked collaboratively, not all of us have worked together before. We have worked hard to select a professional and accountable team, but there are times when personality conflicts are inevitable. This is our first big challenge.
Second, when time is of the essence, it always rains! While some of what we will shoot can be done in a studio, a significant portion of our movie will be filmed outside. A rainy day, a windy day, snow, traffic accidents or other unforeseen natural circumstances, can have a major impact on a production with limited time and very tight budget. While many of us have experience reinventing how to shoot something because of inclement weather or accidents, you never can tell when you will be surprised, equipment will be compromised, costumes ruined, or the day becomes a total bust because we can't get makeup to stick to an actress' face.
Finally, you never know when your camera will just crap out, or a landowner decides its your fault his cow died. A small budget production can't always afford to have back up equipment and back up locations. In these moments, the commitment of a cohesive and flexible crew can mean the difference between a much abbreviated short film, and the feature we intend to create.
A good deal of this film has already been shot, and some semblance of a movie will be made. The inherent risks and challenges of a larger production mean that the film may be shorter, stranger, or simply less magnificent than we intend it to be. We have our script, our actress, team, location and crew. We need your support. Every project has it's challenges but we will do everything in our power to see this film through till its completion.
