About this project

From Across the River

A photography exhibit in honor of the Ten Year Anniversary of September 11th

Hi, I’m Sandra Swieder and welcome to my Kickstarter project.

As a photographer and a resident of New Jersey, I was able to document the events of September 11, 2001 from the New Jersey perspective.  I followed the Hudson waterfront from the last standing tower, to the rescue and recovery efforts, to the memorials. I then established relationships with key emergency personnel and collected their stories.

I am producing a photography exhibit titled “From Across the River".  I will be opening my exhibit on September 1, 2011 in honor of the Ten Year Anniversary at Art House Productions in Jersey City.

Immediately following the attacks on September 11, 2001, Hudson County's waterfront became the hub for emergency personnel, volunteers and over 200,000 survivors who were ferried from lower Manhattan to the Jersey waterfront. Upon their arrival to the Jersey side, thousands were decontaminated, triaged, hospitalized and given shelter.

A waterfront triage started on the morning of September 11th grew to a four-block radius of emergency personnel, volunteers, supplies and families. The staging area at Exchange Place became the lifeline to ground zero.

Nearly 700 citizens perished from the garden state. New Jersey had a front row seat on September 11th and for us it was an even more visual impact, looking out across the river to an empty skyline.

This project will illustrate what took place along the Hudson River and how New Jersey responded to the immediate needs of lower Manhattan that Tuesday morning and in the days, weeks and months following.  On that day, New Jersey showed itself to be more than a sister state, earning it the honor of being called “the silent sixth borough.”

From Across the River will consist of large sized museum quality digital plexiglass prints and other mediums such as canvas, vinyl and photographic paper printed by Duggal.

I am producing a short video of interviews from emergency personnel who contributed first-hand accounts such as Dr. Robert Lahita, Director of Medical Operations on the Jersey City waterfront; Jerry Cala, Director of the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management; Dr. Angelo Caprio of St. Mary Hospital in Hoboken and his medical staff who assisted on the Hoboken waterfront and decontaminated over 10,000 people on September 11th, the largest decon in history; New Jersey Task Force One Leaders James Riley and Sgt. Dan Mitten along with other NJTF1 members. NJTF1 was the first organized group to assist New York at ground zero.

The exhibition will also include a live memorial sculpture of reclaimed steel from ground zero.

In order to produce From Across the River, I need your help.  Printing, framing, video production, graphic design, promotional pieces, reception expenses, PR, postage, it all costs money.

I want you to be a part of this very special memorial exhibit.  Please take a moment to review my rewards and please be a part of the importance of producing this historic documentation.

The overall budget of the project is $10,000 that I need to raise. I am raising funds by in kind services, I am reaching to the local community and I am working with local government grants. Kickstarter only funds projects that meet their financial  goal. So spread the word, From Across the River needs your help to make it happen.

To date, no exhibit, book or documentary examines the story of the Jersey side.

From Across the River will be exhibited at:

Art House Productions from September 1st - September 15th, 2011

Hudson County William Brennan Court House September 27th - October 14th, 2011

Thank you and please don't forget September 1st at Art House Producitons in Jersey City. The show will then travel to Hoboken and other New Jersey locations. All updates and show locations will be listed on the Facebook page. Come be a part of history, help make this show happen.

All international backers, please consider adding $15 to cover shipping costs, thanks.

On September 11, 2001, as most of the nation watched broadcasts of the World Trade Center attacks and held its breath in shock, Ms. Swieder roved the Hudson River waterfront and captured the heroic rescue and recovery efforts of medical professionals, firemen, police, volunteers and an ever changing skyline. After the familiar sight of the Twin Towers collapsed from the New York City skyline, she continued to document the experiences of survivors, witnesses and emergency responders on the Jersey side. Swieder has created a historical record through her lens.

Ms. Swieder was featured in the NJN/PBS television program, New Jersey State of the Arts, a part of the History of the World Trade Center exhibition at the Jersey City Public Library. At the International Center of Photography, New York, Swieder participated as a photographer and volunteer in the Here is New York world-travelling exhibit, which includes a video booth interview of her.
