Barmy is a heartfelt romantic drama about Charlie, a newspaper cartoonist, and Amy his home healthcare nurse.
Story:
Charlie Atwood (Napoleon Ryan) is the creator of 'Barmy,' a newspaper comic with dwindling readership about the necessity of self-reliance. Severely injured in a car-bicycle collision, Charlie is forced to face his worst fear: the complete loss of independence. Amy Murray (Sherill Turner) has her hands full as the home health care nurse assigned to Charlie. Confined to a full-leg cast and virtually immobile, Charlie must reevaluate his thought process and direction of the cartoon, while struggling with a growing fondness for Amy.
What We Need:
We've completely filmed and edited Barmy, but need your help so that Barmy can be shown to audiences. We need funding to submit to both U.S. and international film festivals around the world. We also need funding so that we can create a final digital print of the film for projection. Without this print, we can't show Barmy within a theater.
Every $100 above and beyond our goal will allow us to submit to an additional festival which helps Barmy tremendously.
Director's Statement:
I am passionate about telling great stories, and this is a story
that's very close to my heart. I find that it's all too easy to get
caught up in the ideal of being self-reliant. By trying to live at this
standard as productive "individuals," most people live very isolated,
unaware of the beauty of community around them. That's what this story
is about – one guy, Charlie, who lives a self-reliant life to the
extreme, until his accident, and then learns through his struggle that
it's far more rewarding to work with others, instead of just on his own.
It's a lesson that I've had to learn, and plan to share its
significance through the very unique lens of the life of an independent
newspaper cartoonist.
The nature of the funding and production of this film followed this same
principal. We brought together a group of passionate independent
filmmakers to contribute both time and funds to make it possible with a
very modest budget to bring this story to life. I recognize the
power of collaboration, and believe that this is a story that shows
that spirit in a unique and powerful way.
