Update #4: YeeHOO! Thank you to all our Kickstarter Backers. Over 10k and still 37 hours to go!

Posted on October 27, 2011

Yeehoo!  We surpassed our goal and it's all because of your Facebook posts, Twitter tweets and, most importantly, YOU!  We greatly appreciate the generosity from each and everyone of you.

With much of Thursday and Friday remaining in our Kickstarter campaign, we have time to continue to raise funding.  With your pledges we can afford to make the movie in large part, but there is one element we still cannot afford: FILM. When David (Berry) and I first talked about the look of Cowboy Creed, we agreed that we'd love to shoot on 16mm film to capture that legendary look of a Western. Since then, we've researched and tested and have found that film, with its rough, organic texture tells us, 'Yessir, that there's a Western.' The nick or rub is, film is indeed expensive-- upwards of $1000 a day.  Our new goal-- or should I say, our new QUEST is to raise enough funds to film our film... on film!  It would be amazing if we can continue to raise funds though our Kickstarter to help take Cowboy Creed to the next level. Are you with us?!

If you're able, please continue to Tweet and Facebook straight until we hit the end on Friday, October 28th at 11pm Eastern/8pm Pacific.

Thanks again, pardners!
Ben, JT, David and the whole Cowboy Creed posse!

Before you give up on alternatives to get that Western look, have you checked out what is capable with the Red Epic? Specifically, http://vimeo.com/25423444 their own short film TATOO (western stuff starts at 3:30 in). They shot it in only a few days and I think they got pretty authentic look. On a short schedule, digital production's immediate feedback and speed through processing is nothing to sneeze at when you're working on a tight budget.

Just thoughts to ponder. I'm very happy you've made your target goal. Ride 'em Cowboy (Creed)!

Thanks Jeff! Hi Christopher! Thanks for the link! The Epic is indeed a cool camera. When Dave and I sat down with the script, we talked about what look and feel will serve the story best. We chatted about all the various systems (camera and workflow) we've used over the passed ten or so years-- Dave's used about every single one out there(!) and we've both shot on film. From a creative standpoint, we decided that film has the aesthetic we're looking for right out of the gate. From a technical one, considering the limitations our small indie film will have and the lighting conditions we'll be working with, film will actually allow our tight crew to move faster than digital and with less equipment. Another one of my objectives is to avoid a lot of color correction and post-processing after filming. Film will give us the texture and color rendition we need just through Dave's work on set and film developing, requiring little adjustment. All of this means the larger up-front cost of film will actually be largely offset with time savings in both production and post. AND that means Cowboy Creed will be completed faster and we'll all get to enjoy it sooner!

      Thanks again!
      Ben

I wholeheartedly endorse your filmic choice, just wanted to put options out there. Personal experience with media is always key in decision making. It's interesting that you're one of the few people I've heard claim that film's post costs would be faster and cheaper. (General consensus I've discerned is that it's basically a tie, with the immediacy of feedback versus less technical proficiency needed to tweek the images usually the deciding factor-- outside of the more important, aesthetic choice, of course.) But, when you have a plan and stick to it, you can achieve greatness.

It's really a shame that the last film camera manufacturers have stopped producing new film cameras. I applaud those who stick to the medium for its artistic benefits. I can't wait to see what you do with the project. (And I WILL! now that you've been fully funded.)

Thanks for the discussion, and good luck.
