Update #50: quick update

Posted about 13 hours ago

I have done some tests with a printer- they didn't come out great- so I am going back for a second round to get it better. I am also trying to get better scans made so they will be even better images.

The Book is moving along.  A few more pictures were added.  I am waiting to see the new proofs.  I hope that I can send out the prints sooner than later and will let you know how things are coming with the book as soon as I hear.

While I love photography, I am certainly more of a filmmaker than a photographer.  Last year was very busy with our film Battle for Brooklyn.  The film helped us to get a guggenhiem grant which is amazing for us.  Yesterday I went to their offices to meet the grantee liason Amy Skinner.  The first thing she did when I walked in was excitedly show me a book by Brian Ulrich

Last year when the campaign was going on Brian generously reached out to me with an offer to help get the book made.  He offered advice and guidance.  It's a small world.  Thanks Brian- and I hope you all enjoy this work as much as I do

Update #47: The big news

Posted on March 1

Ok

I am sorry for the delay and lack of clarity but here is the great news.  As we were finishing up the campaign last year I was approached by designer Peter Miles (who had been forwarded some of the blogs about the kickstarter campaign).  He really liked the work and wanted to help make the book.  We met and he told me that there were two options.  One would be to do it with Rizzoli (in this case there would be more books, better distro and more money)- or do it as a Miles/Steidl book.  I had heard of steidl, and actually have a couple of steidl robert frank books.  I liked that idea but thought that is was a book that should be in malls (ie rizzoli).  The very next day I saw a move at the Hot Docs Film Festival called "How to Make a Book with Steidl".  within minutes it was clear that this book had to be made with Steidl.  Now it is.

In the movie Steidl travels the world making incredible books.  It was overwhelming to watch.  He prints everything at his own press in Germany (and is always years behind).

One worry was that it would take forever so I was planning to get the books made just for backers first.  Now we are going to use some of the kickstarter money to expedite the process- and steidl is going to make something special about the kickstarter edition.

Stiedl makes books with the best photographers in the world - including Robert Frank and William Eggleston (who were inspirations for the project) - so this is a pretty incredible event.

Best case scenario the books will be done this summer.  They are designed for the most part and ready to go.

So a massive thank you to all the backers who made this possible and to Kickstarter for making it possible for us to all come together in this way.  The great news is that Steidl books are instant collector items- and as the kickstarter edition of just over 300+ will be even more collectible.  I hope that they will have been worth the wait.

Update #46: books

Posted on January 21

Hello all.

I just got a question about the books.  I have given the slides to the designer.  He was going to get them scanned in Germany in November, but his trip got delayed till January. He has basically designed the book and now needs to professionally scan and re layout the book.  As soon as that is done I will send the project to the printer.  It should realistically be a three month turn around to get it printed and shipped by boat- They will go out ASAP!

We have been a little bit overwhelmed by our other kickstarter project, "Battle for Brooklyn".   The film was short listed for an Oscar- so keep your eyes out on Tuesday to see if it gets a nomination.  We were showing the film in Washington DC last week and went to the Hirschorn where I snapped a few Mall like images.

Thanks for your patience.  I assure that the books are in the works and will be fantastic.
