Whats the latest here in March?
Sam- I will post an update - but the designer has the slides and he has roughly designed the book. I am waiting as anxiously as you for him to finish. He's a top tier designer so he's a bit busy- but very excited about the project. It will be top of the line. I apologize for the delays.
Any updates? When should we get your book? thanks
@ Jason- The images have been scanned and have been given to the designer. It's gonna be a while=- but it's gonna be good.
Any update on the progress?
I loved the 80's...great project and I can't wait to get the book
When I get this book I am gonna crank: Last Mall by Steely Dan and look through it. Cant wait!
thanks everyone unbelievably excited
Um... Pulling IT off, rather. Doh.
This is great! Congratulations on pulling off, Rumur. I, like the rest of the backers, eagerly await this killer book!
Congrats! I tried to be the one to push it over 12k but i was a few mins too late! Looking forward to receiving the book! Its gonna be awesome to show this off. Great job!
I don't think there is a babbages in there. I was really trolling for people more than places- as I walked through the amlls- looking for relationships between people and the place- so things like tape world pop up- but I don't recall a a babbages.
Do you have any pictures of the old software store called Babbage's? I would love to see them in the book! thanks
good luck on the home stretch, bro!!
Good for you Rumur! This project was a featured project on kickstarter, so I'm not surprised by the boost in backers.
Interessante o seu projeto, mas não tenho recursos para apoia-lo, boa sorte.
Smithaven Mall is "the mall" for me... Do I know any of you guys making this movie? I think we have a mutual friend: Crowley?
lovely photos man! amazing project
there's a decade or more between my mall years and yours, but not much really changed in those years. the ratio of video games to to pinball machines may have gone up, and the size of hair and shoulder pads changed, but it's still hanging out at the mall with people who'll be your best friends forever...until they go to college or get married or just move on.
malls are barely half a century old, and they're already dying out. we're swimming in information & easy access to whatever we want, and there's no reason to drive miles and miles just to look at jeans, or buy a giant pretzel. i'm not going to miss tape world, or hickory farms, but where will the kids go when they're too big for the sandbox but not ready for the wide open world?

The video that went with the mall images included a song by my band from the 1990's- sleepyhead. As the above link will tell you- we were criminally under appreciated ;( - and as such don't have much of a life on the internet- Which is why I made a few videos with photos. I'll post more in the coming months.
sorry AR I don't think that i did. The project started on Long Island. Then I went to NC (South Square, Northgate)- travelled to Ohio, Madison, Detroit, Chicago, North Dakota, Spokane, Bellvue, Then I think we hit a mall in Missouri- and maybe one or two more.
I think I'm the girl with the suede boots on, next to the girl with the pink sweatshirt and other girls standing near the framed art store. It looks like me and I had that same outfit exactly. And I was a mall junkie that year and that age. Did you take shots in Pennsylvania? Like Springfield Mall or McDade Mall or King of Prussia or anything around there in PA?
This is such an awesome project. So many of us grew up in our local malls, I have to admit I cried a little when I learned "my" mall closed. How could I not when I've been hearing my whole life the story of the day I left the hospital where I was born and my mom took me to that mall before she took me home? I got my first pet goldfish at that mall. The fountain there is where I made my first wish, and then subsequently stole my first quarter. The rustle of plastic shopping bags and the smell of food court pizza always bring memories of not just "a mall" but specifically The Lincoln Mall... my mall.
Dennis,
there's no fun being made.
You can make fun of the hair and fasion all you want. It was a much better time to live for most of us than the kind of world we live in today.
What a great project! I don't know why the 80's decade is so fascinating, but it is. I was a young 'tween' for most of the 80's, but old enough to have participated in the iconic fashions, hairstyles, and music trends. Much like some of the previous comments, I could easily place me and my group of friends in some of your photos. That's what makes it so fun! Totally radical, dude!
brandie- it could be- i think i shot a mall near san fran-
Very close resemblance, found the pic on Updates. I must have a twin in the world. HaHa!
Did you take any pics at a mall in Bakersfield or Eureka, Ca? The girl in pic on the 19 sec looks like me. Even my kids agree. That's pretty cool.
merry- it just might be.
Is Great Northern in there or a mall from Ohio? I swear it's me in one of the pictures...seriously.
Thanks Rumur -- just read through them. What memories of that mall I have. I started hanging out there with friends in 1982 (age 12) -- it was such the scene! No place like it. Wonder what it's like now.......wonder if it has the same vibe......
there's more about the smith haven in the updates of this page.
Many of those shots are of Smithhaven Mall (on Long Island)! MY MALL!!! I worked at that Sears when I was in HS in 1987. Lived a mile up the street from there. I'd know that tile pattern in the floor anywhere! I think I might have even graduated HS with those 3 girls in that one photo. Amazing!!! We ALL had big hair and even bigger attitudes! Thanks for the memories......
Within seconds of beginning the video my husband exclaimed "That's the Smith Haven Mall!" We'd know that place anywhere - hanging out on Saturdays was a right of passage. "The Mall" did have a special energy and was our 1980s version of the town square. I half expected to see myself in a oversized Benetton shirt in this video.
It is amazing how sentimental comments on Yahoo are about these photos - like the 80s is some NeverNeverLand when horrible things never happened. It wasn't all about bad hair and ill-fitting jeans, but I guess some nostalgia from time to time isn't a terrible thing.
Great project and looking forward to more like these.
don't think so catherine- though there were malls that we hit places that were identical- one in Missouri was the same as one near vancouver- down to the restaurants in the food court.
I was just wondering if any of these happen to be from Northwoods Mall In North Charleston SC
Green Acres is in there, right?
I knew it! I thought that place was the coolest when I was in middle school, but it was far away so we only went on special occasions. Yes, the mall was considered a place to go on special occasions...
Can't wait for the book
yes - a lot are taken at smith haven mall- i started the project for a college photo class- i was dating a girl who went to stony brook- so i would go there and shoot in the winter spring of 89. that summer i drove across the country to expand the project. those are your friends from the football team there.
Everyone at my work is obsessed with these photos!! They're fantastic, so thoroughly representative of the era we grew up in. The mall was everything!
I am curious though, are some of these taken at the Smithaven Mall on Long Island? I feel like I would recognize that place anywhere...
thanks for the nudge Christopher- 30 people have liked this page on facebook in the last hour.
you're on huffington post! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/14/10-new-york-artistic-proj_n_849250.html#s263791&title=Malls_Across_America
Good luck, I would like to see this happen.
y'know i'm not sure mr. disdain- it's the same song but not the same recording maybe- this version comes from the album- i made this video a few months ago because our music doesn't really exist in the world of the internet- so i started to slam out a few photo based videos that you can see on the rumur page of facebook- or on our vimeo page
we had a blast playing both songs live- prc being quite a bit different than like a girl- though we rocked it up pretty good
Is the song from the same single w/ 'Like a Girl Jesus?' Great cover.
I found this video pitch to be disappointing: it's not what I look for in a good Kickstarter project solicitation. It didn't have a personal appeal explaining the project and making me feel your passion for why the book needs to be out there and (I assume) your 20+ year dream release. I think your project is cool but I think you missed an opportunity to communicate that.
Your "Malls Across America" series is outstanding! The 1980's was a wonderful time in America before the Techo-age of today. Seeing the big hair, cut-offs, leg warmers, and MALLS just remind me of a time when things were more social. I really like the one of the elderly couple the best it really says something. I can see these images hanging up and being purchased too everyone loves to reminisce and think about "the good old days" Good luck and you have my backing on this one!
