About this project

Synopsis

Even supernatural economies have downturns. Over the past 2,000 years, the funding for experimental research in the mortal realm has been slashed again and again. Now, two supernatural beings are in desperate need of a perfect test subject, and this time the fate of all humanity is up for reconsideration.

Cass Divine is just a student. This makes her the perfect blank slate, the perfect test subject.

No harm is intended, but an experiment wouldn't be necessary if the results were foreseeable!

The Project

With modern technology, it doesn't take a lot of money to make a show. What once required tens of thousands of dollars in equipment, film, sets, lighting, and talent can now be achieved with a fraction of those amounts, and an enthusiastic team.

Here's a summary of what we have planned.

  1. Write the script

The first story arc will have five episodes. Each episode will tell a complete story, but also fit into the season story arc. The full set will run about half an hour.

  2. Casting

The title role is set, and we have a solid plan for the two supernatural characters. Further casting will be nailed down after the first story arc is fully scripted.

  3. Shoot it!

With your help, we'll acquire a Canon D7 or T2i and accessories. This camera and its accessories, while significantly cheaper than most of the alternatives, makes up the vast majority of our Kickstarter goal. I'll mount this to a home-brew steady cam, get some portable lights, and get to work! With five episodes, each around five minutes in length, we can shoot all of the raw footage in about a week. Voice acting will be provided as needed following the live shoot.

  4. Editing

Footage in-hand, we'll splice together scenes, add music, sound effects, etc. and produce ready-to-distribute episodes.

  5. Distribution

We fulfill all of the awards due to our generous donors, Kickstarters or otherwise, and find new audiences for the show. This will include web portals, as well as festivals and other real-world venues.

Costs

Everyone on the project is working for the love of the story, but that mutual excitement has logistical limitations. After all, we have a show and associated merchandise to produce! After finding clever ways to cut almost every corner available to a film maker, here are a few key elements we need to account for.

  • The Camera

We're going to get a Canon D7 or T2i (a close sibling) to film with. It's a lot less expensive than equivalent dedicated film cameras, but has been gaining a lot of popularity in low-budget production circles.

  • The Lens

To do this right, we need a 24-70 Canon L-series Zoom Lens. This is a great all-in-one lens for shooting in a variety of environments, and capturing any kind of shot. They're not much cheaper than the camera bodies themselves.

  • The Filming Accessories

Memory cards, card readers, batteries and chargers, audio gear, camera mounts, etc. Many things, like the camera mounts, will be home-brew, and we'll just need to cover the hardware store parts expenses. Some things we can't make ourselves, as hard as we try, and we'll reluctantly have to purchase them instead.

  • Props and Costumes

Luckily, we already have all of the tools required to build props and equipment once we have the raw material. You'd be surprised what can be done with a dremmel and some epoxy. Between the custom equipment mentioned above, and any additional props and costumes, I'll be spending a lot of quality time at my work bench/sewing table, but that effort will mean we get a lot of mileage out of relatively scare resources.

Rewards

To the right you'll see what we're offering you to participate in helping bring this story to life. On the rewards where you get to contribute content to the show or website, we must ask that it be family-friendly.

And if you're exceptionally excited about this project (like us!), and get to pick your own power for Cass, know we'll have to take creative license on its implementation to get it to fit into our shoestring budget. Don't worry, we'll find a way, and it'll be funny, and that's what the show's all about!

...in Conclusion

Every resource I have will be going into this project. Every contribution you provide will go to making the project more successful, not less expensive. I'm asking a lot of my team. They're working for free, and will probably have to provide their own costumes, do their own hair and makeup, find their own transportation, buy their own food, burn vacation and sick days, etc. Your contributions will not only earn you your due rewards, but will help me make this project successful enough to be worthy of such a stalwart bunch.
