Update #6: New Rooftop Short Film DVD Lineup

Posted on July 30, 2010

Rooftop Films needs to raise $5,000 by August 4 in order to "extend the summer" — add more screenings, go to new locations, host more events in the cooler months. If you love Rooftop Films, and want to see us keep going, please make a donation.

And, since you want to see us expand, how about expanding into your home? If you donate $30 or more, you can bring Rooftop to your very own TV with a limited edition short film DVD only for current donors. The lineup includes some of the coolest Rooftop short films around. All the movies on the DVD are by New York filmmakers, with our special blend of guts, grit, glorious beauty and grand stories. There's comedy, drama, animation and more.

Here's the lineup:

ANATINUS (David Wanger | Brooklyn, NY | 2 min.)
Anatinus is a musical cinematographical voyage into the hazy early hours of the day in miraculous industrial Greenpoint. mambafever.com

HAIR MAN (Zach Timm & Matthew Rivera | New York, NY | 3:19 min.)
There is no place to hide for the Mystery Hair Man of Williamsburg. They - or we - are watching his every move. aligned-creative.com

OBVIOUS CHILD (Gillian Robespierre | Brooklyn, NY | 23 min.)
A romantic comedy about an unplanned pregnancy, an abortion, and a great first date in an unlikely location. gillianrobespierre.com

MARIACHI (Elena Greenlee | Brooklyn, NY | 13 min.)
Carlos is a local teen struggling to carve out his identity somewhere between his Mexican-born parents and his Brooklyn-bred peers. An unexpected accident and an ensuing immigration investigation force him into uncharted territory, further from home and closer to finding himself.

THE COMMONERS (Penny Lane & Jessica Bardsley | New York, NY | 12:30 min.)
In 1890, a wealthy eccentric named Eugene Schieffelin collected every bird ever mentioned by Shakespeare and released them into Central Park. The only one to survive in the New World was the European Starling, now among the commonest - and most despised - birds in America. p-lane.com | jessicabardsley.com

THE TERRIBLE THING OF ALPHA-9! (Jake Armstrong | Brooklyn, NY | 5:45 min.)
A space bounty hunter travels to a lonely planet to kill a terrible monster. jakehatesyou.blogspot.com

LEDO AND IX GO TO TOWN (Emily Carmichael | Brooklyn, NY | 7:45 min.)
What exactly do video game characters do when we're not around? What if they chat and bicker like we do, wonder and dream like we do, feel boredom and dread like we do, despite being 48 pixels tall? An eight-bit tribute to Waiting for Godot, Carmichael returns to Rooftop with another film in the Ledo and Ix series, using the visual vocabulary of retro video games to explore the human fear of both the unknown and the known. kidcandrive.com
