Robin, I just wanted to tell you how amazing & inspiring your entire Kickstarter experience is. I just launched my own book here last week (http://kck.st/c533wf) and I'm looking to your fantastic project to learn. You are an inspiration, thank you! <3 Erin

Magnificent project, Robin. I loved Mr. Penumbra, and I think this methodology (this "army of angels") may be just what we need. Perhaps this is the future of publishing.

Got my books today, right smack in the middle of exam period; thankfully I have already written my linear algebra exam, so i needn't worry about your book distracting me from my most important exam. That being said once I received the package, ran up to my room and carefully cut open the package, cracked open one of the copies and didn't stop reading till it was done.
Well now its done, I'm going to have to reread it again and again and again.....

Right back to studying for my psych exam tomorrow.

Now that I think of it I'll have to get a friend to lock them up for me, your book is a better (worse?) distraction than the great intertubes (yes i read xkcd).

Just got my book and all I can say is WOW! The "enclosure" it came in and the extra goodies were just icing on the already quite delicious cake. It really was like getting a package from another world. Well done sir, and thanks a lot. One question: when will the digital copies become available? The physical book looks so sleek and pristine I'm almost afraid to mess it up by reading it.

Robin - Once you have a moment to breathe after the book is produced, I would love to learn more about what things worked and didn't work in terms of using KickStarter. I have a project in mind that involves transport, machinery and race (and that's all I will reveal for now).

Thanks!

Just FYI, I discovered why I couldn't properly sign up - there's an Amazon Payments glitch for non-US Amazon Turk account holders (I am one, even though I never use it) which means that they are asked for a US address even though one is not needed. Apparently Amazon know, and are "working on it".

@4o66: I agree, Saul's idea is totally great. I hadn't thought of including the "your book was here" metadata, too; that way people could take pictures & reassemble the whole thing online! (Too ambitious?)

PURE GOLD it is. The final package is going to be really artful and (I hope?) fun to receive and read.

46. Qg_sqr.thumb
4o66 on October 21, 2009

Robin: based on some quick math, you have 456 backers, some getting more than one copy... 774 to be exact. Does that mean we will get the ultra rare "PURE GOLD" edition?

I love the updates, love the The Writer & The Witch, and couldn't stop read 24 hour Bookstore once I started. Thanks! Can't wait for the book!

P.S. Saul's idea about the mural would be awesome, especially if each book came with a small poster and a "your book was here --->". Please???

Re: uniquification of the package: why not unbox the books, stack them, spine to the wall into a huge wall, then hire a graffiti artist to spray a huge mural of your heroine and her AI onto the exposed paper edge. Then everyone gets a few pixels of the portrait.

I'm interested in hearing more about how this project is affecting your life. Would you consider an update addressing that aspect? Things like... how many hours per day do you spend writing? Do you keep a schedule or just write all the time? Are you maintaining your social life or has the looming deadline preempted it? Did you feel a shift in the quality of your writing once you left Current and got to write full-time?

50. Sloanro-the-sloanyo2.thumb
Robin Sloan on October 14, 2009

Nope! Remember, when people are contributing, they're basically just pre-ordering a book, so it's all paid for. And if it was 10,000, that would raise weird questions like, uh, where am I going to put them—but under 1,000 is doable. ;-)
