Doorways is a short film directed by Tosin Coker, a close friend who also attended AAU (Academy of Art University) and created the movie as his final student film for completion of his Master’s Degree in Directing. It is the story of 29-year-old Tanya Marks, an African-American woman who dreams of being a singer though she still suffers from the emotional, and physical scars of an abusive relationship from her past. 

The film debuted at the school’s annual Epidemic Film Festival and was nominated for “Best Directing” in April 2011. Since then the 23-minute film has been critically acclaimed at this year’s Pan-African Film Festival and is being nominated at this years Roxbury International Film Festival, Texas Black Film Festival, and AOF International Film Festival. Respectfully, none of these film festivals compare to the prestige of Festival De Cannes better known simply as Cannes. 

Cannes is the “world’s most prestigious and highly publicized film festival.” [Wikipedia] Similar to the Sundance Film Festival, films that garner attention at Cannes are sure to raise the profile of both filmmaker’s and actor’s involved with these projects. We are all very excited particularly for Tosin, and the film’s lead actress, Emmy-Award winning Diahnna Nicole Baxter. I have been invited as a group of 6 members of both the cast and crew to represent Doorways and see how well it does at Cannes.
