This Film Noir homage follows a children's author who wants to become more serious. His life turns into the mystery novel he is writing
"It was an unreasonably warm afternoon. The kind after a sticky day, where the smell of honeysuckle fills a seemingly vacant apartment. Only, you know what they say about honeysuckle..."
H.W. Reed (H. for John Huston, W. for Billy Wilder) is a successful children's author who lives in an apartment on 3rd street. Our film is about Reed's ambition to to become a serious author, he wants to write murder mysteries. Not children's literature. As the film progresses, Reed's character becomes more and more like the mystery novel he is trying to write. He becomes so engrossed with his story that he eventually he turns into a 1940s film noir detective stuck in the modern world. As you can imagine, a bit of comedy comes into play. Like in any classic film noir, it all leads to one answer: murder.
As filmmakers we have always found film noir to be an intriguing genre, filled with wit and cynicism. Classic noirs like Double Indemnity and The Maltese Falcon have inspired our filmmaking techniques and visual style. Many film noir recreations and homages have been made where the film is almost always a period piece with cliche dialogue and music. Our film is different in that what makes it a noir is the story and visual design. We are making a film noir with the mindset of a filmmaker in the 1940s.
This project encompasses many different creative minds including filmmakers, designers and musicians. We plan to use a local jazz composer/band to write an original score, and to use two local musicians to write two original songs for the film. We also plan to hire area actors and crew for the production. The money earned on Kickstarter will go towards hiring this talent, and will decide to which extent that talent can be used.
Where Do You Come In?
In any film many factors need to come together for the final result to be successful. The money funded on kickstarter will go towards:
Providing provisions for talented cast and crew
Composing and recording an original soundtrack
Renting the necessary camera and lighting equipment for the film
Renting a police car
Obtaining film permits in Louisville
Any extra money goes to our future projects
It is notable that by backing this project you are not just supporting one or two artists, but a community of artists and art forms. The money earned will determine how many creative minds can be brought onto the production.
The Film noir genre has produced some of the greatest films and filmmakers of all time. It is our honor to pay our respects to the genre.
About The Filmmakers
Evan Sennett (Director and Editor) has experience in directing Narrative Shorts, Commercials and Animated Films. Recently his film Epitaph was screened at 21c in the Kentucky Shorts Festival. This is one of many collaborations with Matthew Rivera and he feels their work gets better after each film. For both filmmakers this project is the next step up in their short films. Evan would like to continue his interest in film by studying film production at the university level and eventually having a career in the film industry as an editor.
Matthew Rivera (Producer and Director of Photography) has made several films with Evan Sennett including our most recent collaboration The Executive. He has also won several awards including Emerging Filmmaker at the Underneath Cincinnati Film Festival for his short film Knife. He would like to continue his interest in filmmaking by studying film production at the university level and eventually having a career in the film industry as a director of photography.
What is Film Noir?
When bad people are put into bad situations, like theft and murder. The atmosphere is gloomy, shadowy and dark. The music is jazzy and dramatic. Often the main character has a first person narration throughout the film. This type of filmmaking is just not seen anymore. Help us bring to the screen a new Film Noir that not only pays homage, but brings attention to this forgotten era.
