About this project
Every week, our RISD 2nd Life student volunteers push a whole lot of material up hills and across campus (on Providence’s potholed and icy roads) in far from adequate wheelie bins. We need something far better. We need Cargo Trikes. Here’s WHY:
We share materials. In fact we trade, collect and redistribute all the resources that students might need at an art school or design community. And we practically do it for free!
We manually collect the unused material and supplies from all the departments around the RISD campus and several institutions around Providence, then store them in our trailers for YOU to use!
But for scrappy art students, this is a lot of labor! To help our fellow volunteers fare better on the harsh hills we need something:
- maneuverable
- compact (for storage)
- requires low maintenance/operating costs
- lightweight
- sustainable
- with space for cargo/load carrying ability
We need Cargo Trikes! We’ve built a relationship with Onya Cycles, who's building us the ideal Front-End Loader for our crazy hills and hundreds of pounds of materials! Check these trikes out:
We hope to raise enough money for two electric cargo trikes. Our rough estimates by our financial guru, inclusive of shipping, production and Kickstarter fees, bring our goal to $9000! Pledge Now!

HOW DOES RISD 2nd Life WORK? The RISD, Brown University and Providence community are encouraged to come to our trailers to look through our available collection of material and goods, anything from raw lumber to desk lamps. When they find what they like they can either trade in their own used material of relative equal value or make a small monetary donation.
MORE ABOUT RISD 2nd Life: Set up in 2004, 2nd Life was created in response to the massive amount of usable supplies being discarded and disposed of improperly. 2nd Life is entirely run by students. Our trailer is conveniently and strategically located centrally on campus, allowing for students and faculty to share materials in the middle of the school/work day.
2nd Life is more than a recycling center; it's a means to get students involved outside of the classroom with the local community. We hope to continue to be a vehicle for student run sustainability initiatives and a generator of innovative sharing platforms. Our recent gallery show is one example where 2nd Life aims to provide a program in which students can share projects and ideas revolving around sustainability.
