These are some pictures I took while I was working on the original cover, I thought everyone might be interested. Their was a post I made on my blog about this, but I thought it would be nice to run through it quick for everyone here.
I use a screen printing method that involves hand cutting a piece of lacquer film. Using a knife, I cut out the design from this thin layer or lacquer that has a transparent plastic backing. Everything that I want to be black in the end needs to be cut away.
Adhering the lacquer film with acetone always makes me nervous because it needs to be done with just the right touch. If you put to much down, then the acetone will destroy the crisp edges of the film; if you don't put enough acetone down the film won't pull up into the screen and it will tear off when you pull the clear plastic off the back.
After it dries and the plastic backing is removed, I have to mask off the edges with painters tape. Printing is pretty simple, I just use a squeegee to force the ink through the screen.
And here are some of the final prints for the hardcover books. They are printed on multiple colors so, although some might have a twin out there, each will be unique. Hopefully my next update will be about the paperback covers, but everything is going really well.
