Update from PAX East

Update #3 · Apr 8, 2012 · 1 comment

The live video feed worked once but the sound was terrible. Fortunately I have recorded that video and will be posting it without the noise.

I got to take a look at one of our backers, Titans of Industry from Gozer Games.

Had a great time doing an interview and getting see the game. Looks like a fun play and the prototype is done very well.

Many of you backed me to get exposure for your projects. I will be providing that exposure in different ways than what was originally attempted.

I will be loading video on Youtube as well as blog and podcast. Thank you all for helping make this possible. I'm sorry by the delay and the technical issues. Hopefully as we continue to deliver you will enjoy the content.

Internet Hell - Day 1 at Pax East

Update #2 · Apr 6, 2012 · 2 comments

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who helped me do this project. The good news is that we will now be able to broadcast the show without commercial interruption.

The bad news is that the Internet at the conventions center has been absent, non-existent, or at best, up and down.

This morning, as we got ready to go, I set the camera system up, got all the computers and audio ready, turned on the cameras, started broadcasting and sent out a tweet that we were LIVE. Some of you may have received the announcement.

Then the show opened and all Internet went away. The show has WiFi, which worked yesterday and this morning, until 65,000 people turned on their iPhones.

But I had a plan B - I had brought my own WiFi device just in case. I had tested it extensively before coming and although it was choppy, I was pleased with its performance.

Unfortunately my WiFi 3G/4G is with AT&T. The same people who just had 65,000 people turn on their iPhones.

Plan C - I contacted the convention center and had them come tell me the cost of getting a dedicated line into the room. At this point, all of you had supported me and I needed to get this out, even if it cost me a couple of hundred that I had to pay myself.

The convention center staffer showed up with the paper work. 1 line drop for 1 computer, $1,014. I kept a straight face, thanked him. Told him we will call him tomorrow if we decide we want to go through with this and then I threw the paper away.

Now we are on to Plan D

This involved me traveling the show floor with my mic, headphones, and iPad NOT connected to the Internet, shooting interviews and observations and coming back to my hotel room to load them up for your viewing pleasure. But my Hotel doesn't provide Internet. $17 a day.

And that is why at this moment you are getting this update at 11pm Eastern Time. It is my first time back on the Internet since early this morning and you all are the first group I wanted to let know that we are moving forward but slowly.

Tomorrow I have a Plan E which involves traveling to a different location to see if I can get a signal for my WiFi.

So look on www.thegamewhisperer.com tonight at some point and video should start showing up...semi-live

As I fly in to Boston for PAXEast I have been broadcasting live from the plane. The connection has been a little rough but it has worked.

Nothing more exciting than to connect to the Web and see the project doing so well. We are $40 away from funding with 18 hours to go.

I have a stretch goal if we need one.

If we hit $800 then I will be using UStream Producer Pro and if we hit $1,200 then I will use UStream Producer Studio. These allow greater control of the broadcast, including multiple cameras which means other people can join to to help broadcast.

Thanks for the support and we are getting closer.
