About this project

The Thing is a short film directed by Rhys Ernst, World Premiering at Sundance 2012. In this humorous personal drama, a woman, a transgendered man, and their cat travel towards a mysterious roadside attraction known as "The Thing". Their destination turns out to be not what they were searching for.

Dear Supporter,
Thanks for checking out my fast and furious Kickstarter! With such an imminent deadline, I decided to launch an online fundraiser. I am so close to finishing, but I need to raise $5,000 in order to cover my hard finishing costs and make it to Utah in the end of January. This is my first major festival opportunity; please considering helping me to achieve my goal!

I've been making The Thing (formerly entitled Tristan and Zooey) for over 2 years. What started out as my CalArts MFA thesis has since evolved into a major passion project that matured me as a filmmaker. After graduating last year, I dedicated myself to re-working the film because I believed there was a truly rich story that could be brought out, to reach wider audiences. This perseverance has paid off with an incredible opportunity to premier The Thing in a couple weeks at Sundance 2012.

The Thing has truly been a labor or love, and the result of many hands and helpers. I personally have contributed $7,000 out of pocket, and raised $5,800 in grants and awards. Our 16mm production was also funded by an amazing Kickstarter, in which 203 donors contributed a total of $9,381. At this stage, we have only a few major expenses left to finance. $5,000 is the minimum required to cover the cost of color correction, sound design and mix, HD tape output, basic promotional expenses, and Sundance travel expenses.

Please consider giving any amount, no matter how small, it WILL make a huge difference.

Thank you!

Rhys
