7 girls, 5 weeks, 15 cities, 1 small sedan. The ladies of NYC's Rhinestone Gorilla are going on tour, stripping & writing all the way.
We, the ladies of Rhinestone Gorilla, are about to embark upon our first national tour. We're going to be driving Debra Delorean's 2010 Honda Fit, Lucy, from New York to Los Angeles and back, with stops in...
- New Orleans
- Las Vegas
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco
You can view our tour map here. We're looking forward to collaborating with some of our favorite producers and performers in the national burlesque scene, like Lili von Schtupp (LA), Cha Cha Velour (Vegas), Dottie Lux (SF), Holly Rebelle (Albuquerque), and more. We'll also be fulfilling Lucida's bizarre teenage dream of visiting Minneapolis--her favorite city she's never been to--and performing at Bryant-Lake Bowl, "the coolest sounding venue EVER" (Lucida, c. freshman year).
Rhinestone Gorilla has toured before, but never like this. Our 2009 tour--alternately known as "Westward, Ho!", "The Breast Coast Tour", and "Go Breast, Young Man"--took Lucida Sans, Gemma Stone, Izebel Vivant, Angelique A'LaMode, and friend-of-RGB Miss Elixir on a leisurely, 3-week tour through Las Vegas, Los Angelas, and San Francisco via flight and Greyhound bus. This time around, Rhinestone Gorilla is touring by car and at breakneck pace, with 4-7 girls in tow, depending on the city. Lucida Sans, Gemma Stone, Avian Rush, and Debra Delorean will be touring all 5 weeks; Kinky Demure will join us for 4 weeks; Angelique A'LaMode will join us for 2 weeks; and Izebel Vivant will join us for only 1 because she has a life, like a normal person. If you're not aware, a Honda Fit is a regular ol' 4-door sedan, which only barely seats 5 adults. Wish us luck in this clown car of strippers, costumes, snack food, and egos. Think this sounds like the makings of an excellent blog? IT IS! We'll be blogging daily, and not just the old-fashioned kind! There will be photos and video. If you've ever seen one of our shows, or met us in person, or shared a tawdry late-night gchat with one of us, you know that the Rhinestone Gorillas happen to be excellent and hilarious writers. This blog is going to be GOOD.
ABOUT RHINESTONE GORILLA
Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque is a ragtag team of art school delinquents based in New York City. Hailed as "dangerous-minded and infectious", these rhinestones in the rough are a Time Out New York "Critic's Pick" and a Flavorpill "Editor's Choice". The troupe--which specializes in narrative burlesque, pop culture and literary adaptations, lowbrow comedy, audience competitions, cheesy disco covers, and self-indulgent '90s nostalgia--is currently in monthly residence at The Triad on 72nd and Broadway. Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque is
- Lucida Sans (Producing Director)
- Debra Delorean (Assistant Producer)
- Kinky Demure (Technical Director)
- Gemma Stone (The One With the Chest Tattoo)
- Angelique A'LaMode (The Girl You Can Take Home to Mom)
- Izebel Vivant (The Pint-Sized Ginger with the 10 Foot Presence)
- Avian Rush (Barely Legal, but Legally Bare)
- Spartacus Rising (Token Dude)
Formerly known as Alpha Psi Ecdysia, Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque was founded in 2008 as the nation's premier undergraduate burlesque troupe. While based on the campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz, Rhinestone Gorilla lived a double life as an educational institution and a professional producing entity. On the New Paltz campus, Rhinestone Gorilla dedicated itself to teaching burlesque history, the politics of neo-burlesque and the practice of burlesque performance; off-campus, Rhinestone Gorilla was the underage darling of the New York stripperformance art scene, getting naked on school nights at The Slipper Room, Rififi, Public Assembly, and Sugarland and in venues in LA, SF, Boston, and beyond. Though frequent subjects of controversy and police activity, Rhinestone Gorilla's students on the SUNY campus--who have inherited the name Alpha Psi Ecdysia--remain the only state-sponsored strippers in the nation.
Lucida Sans and Kinky Demure were recently interviewed by Gemma Stone for BUST Magazine! Read their thoughts on collegiate burlesque here.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
We've already raised roughly half of the money that we require. We find ourselves lacking sufficient funds to tour safely--but with almost enough funds to tour recklessly!
Now that we have raised $2500, we have sufficient funds to get us there and back and house us in a hotel in Las Vegas. At $2500, we will still be couchsurfing in all cities besides Vegas with no food budget. $3500 will give us a food budget, and enough money for a few more nights of budget hotel stays as needed.
This tour is incredibly important to us, and unbelievably exciting. We're really proud of how we've grown as artists since we began our work together in 2008, particularly in the eight months since we started our residency at The Triad. We can't wait to share our new acts with the larger burlesque community and to see and learn from other artists all over the country. This tour is a huge gamble for us, and a huge opportunity. With the support of our friends, fans, and The Internet, these will be five of the most exciting weeks of our lives, without being the five most terrifying. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.
